Sharp to Build Plant for Next-Generation Displays | |

Sharp Corp, Japan's biggest maker of liquid crystal displays (LCD), said on Wednesday it will build a new plant in Japan to make advanced, power-saving screens for cell phones and mobile devices. A company spokesman said the plant would start production in 2003 of continuous grain silicon (CGS) screens, a technology promoted by Sharp that incorporates circuitry in the display. The facility will supplement CGS screen output due to start in October at an existing factory at Tenri in western Japan. "Tenri will begin output this autumn, but it looks like we're getting an incredible amount of orders," the spokesman said. The CGS screens, which promise higher resolution, thinner construction and lower production costs as well as less power use, are a key part of Sharp's strategy to use advanced technology to fend off mounting competition from rival LCD makers in South Korea and Taiwan . | ||
