This white paper is designed to introduce the database professional to the SQLXML tier, a combination of XML-based communication to Microsoft® SQL Server™ through an Internet Information Services (IIS) virtual directory. You will learn how SQL Server 2000 accomplishes its compatibility with XML documents by creating virtual documents, or XML that is stored seamlessly within a database. This white paper also includes a brief introduction to the tools necessary for creating, configuring, and executing access to a virtual document. The software development community has seen many changes in its history, but database-programming paradigms have been stable since the relational model. The add-ons of increased scalability, binary storage, and replication were all natural extensions of the same design model.
