At the Microsoft Management Summit in late April, it was announced that the update to Systems Management Server 2003, currently called SMS v4 Beta 1, will be known as System Center Configuration Manager 2007 when it is released in 2006. The new name reflects the growing importance of system configuration management tools, and eWEEK Labs' tests of the beta show that it would be well worth IT managers' time to start working with the product.
While there's a lot that's new in SMS v4 Beta 1—including a fresher look courtesy of MMC (Microsoft Management Console) 3.0—some important contours that shape SMS development haven't changed.
