While car companies, publishers and other businesses warn of a rough 2002, video game makers are preparing for their greatest year ever, fueled by the introduction of two systems promoted with hundreds of millions of dollars in advertising. After a year of unchallenged domination in the market for powerful next-generation game consoles, Sony is under assault. Nintendo and Microsoft each began selling new systems last month that will challenge Sony's PlayStation2, which already shipped more than 20 million around the world.
