Microsoft Corp. MSFT.O posted a higher quarterly profit on Thursday, as an upgrade of its software used to manage computer networks helped boost sales by 11 percent.
The world's largest software maker reported net profit of $1.92 billion, or 18 cents per share, for the fiscal fourth quarter ended June 30, compared with a profit of $1.53 billion, or 14 cents per share, a year earlier.
The latest quarter's results included a charge of $796 million primarily related to a legal settlement with AOL Time Warner Inc. AOL.N . AOL had charged Microsoft with abusing its monopoly power against Netscape, a Web browser that AOL bought in 1999 when Microsoft's Internet Explorer was already becoming the dominant browser.
