  Review: Sony's DRU500A DVD±R/RW Recorder
Time: 14:05 EST/19:05 GMT | News Source: E-Mail | Posted By: David Gasior

CD-RW Central has posted a review of Sony's dual-format DVD writer. Here's a little of what they thought:

"Yes, as you can see, Sony have indeed made a good drive here, it's features are second to none, there is no other drive like it on sale at the moment, but NEC does have a competing drive due for release soon, NEC's drive will only support 16x write on CD-R's, and read at 40x, the Sony DRU500A can write at 24x to CD-R and only read CD-ROM's at 32x speed.

I liked the drive so much, as it was the drive I had been waiting for, so I'm glad I purchased it, but I was soon in for a suprise, Sony was going to release an 'upgrade' in the way of a firmware update for the drive so that it could write at 4x on DVD+R media. This made the drive even more lucrative to the end user and the drive to get."
