In separate announcements this week, Microsoft and Borland are seeking to engage the loyalty of future software developers with new versions of their respective programming tools. Seeking to make its .Net platform the native environment of next-generation computer science graduates, Microsoft today announced its first suite of software tools specifically tailored for academic use. Scheduled to ship at year's end, along with other editions of the long-awaited Visual Studio .Net, the planned Academic edition will expand upon the previously announced Professional edition with application wizards, code samples and management tools to aid instructors in processing computer science assignments. For its part, Borland is pursuing the next generation of software developers by releasing an expanded, freely downloadable version of its JBuilder Java environment. | ||
