Any illusion that your corner of the Internet is a private place where your data is secure and your e-mail is read only by the people to whom you send it can be shattered by a single click on the Privacy.Net Web site. Within seconds, you will see your IP address, your computer host name and the link from which you arrived at the site. If you are interested, another click presents you with a more thorough analysis of who you are and where on the Web you come from. The page divulges how your domain is configured, your browser type and operating system, whether JavaScript is enabled, which plug-ins are installed, and even the width, height and color depth of your computer's monitor. If a single Web site can see all that, just because a person lands on that particular piece of cyber property, how hard is it, then, for a determined hacker to read your e-mail? | ||
