U.S. Video Game Rentals Up; Sony Dominates | |

U.S. video game rental revenue rose more than 9 percent in the first quarter, with Sony Corp (news - web sites).'s PlayStation platform accounting for almost two-thirds of the market, data released on Monday showed. The Video Software Dealers Association, which also tracks rental data for VHS cassettes and DVDs, said game rental revenue increased to $201 million from $184 million a year earlier and $161.4 million in the prior quarter. The top platform in the first quarter was Sony's 1-1/2-year-old PlayStation 2 (news - web sites), with 42.5 percent of the market, including all of the top-10 rental titles. Sony's older PlayStation One, which came out in late 1995, was second, with a 21.6 percent share. Third was Nintendo (news - web sites) Co. Ltd.'s six-year-old Nintendo 64 system, at 18 percent. | ||
