When Windows XP is released in a few months, will smaller software companies benefit from jumping aboard the bandwagon or be run over by it? The long list of new features potentially puts an even longer list of companies in Microsoft's crosshairs, including Adobe Systems, Apple Computer, AOL Time Warner, Corel, InterVideo, MGI, Netopia, Network Ice, RealNetworks, Roxio, Ulead, Zone Labs, Symantec and as many as 20 other companies. "So those features don't look like much, but then what happens?" LeTocq said. "The next release of Microsoft's operating system comes out with enough features so that for most people they don't need anything else. The range of the market that is addressed by the others' products is diminished dramatically." | ||

People demand more and more features from their OSes. Yes, some businesses will have their products rendered useless by Windows XP, but my answer to that is that these businesses shouldn't have bet their entire company on a single product in the first place. Companies who have bet their entire company on a single product always fade away. This is true in any industry. As technology advances, their single product will become progessively useless. Who will they sue? Old Man Time? Symantec has a whole suite of applications, they will not be affected adversely by this. They will continue to innovate and make new products and life will go on. It's call capitalism. |

I would much rather ActiveWin be a site for MS Fanatics than Linux, BSD, Mac OS, Llama OS etc . . . There are enough of those sites on the net as it is.

#24: Uh-oh.. CAR ANALOGY ALERT! heh Microsoft does not own all the roads (PCs), nor does it controls them. It merely makes a single car (OS) that drives on them. It also includes such features as an engine (kernel), a steering wheel (browser) and gages to monitor performance (utilities). Just as Ford and GM continue to upgrade and improve their cars, so then does Microsoft. You come you don't complain that GM is squashing the in-dash aftermarket CD player market by including CD players in many of their new models? |

#44 Exactly. It's sad when you have to continually explain the obvious, isn't it? Mandrake is laying off many employees this month and scaling back the spending budget considerably. It's the beginning o the end for them. What lessons were learned? If you don't make a product that offers more features and innovations than your competitor, then you will fail. What's worse, if you give your product away for free, you are most certainly doomed to fail. |

If you think about it, I really hope MS starts actually forcing people to buy their software rather than just letting them get away with stealing it. It sucks, but heck, they're making a product and everyone is stealing it, that's not right. Conversely, MS's profits will skyrocket because they will have much less piracy, I think they should offer many free services to activated customers. This will make people feel good about buying their software. Free music, free add-on software and other perks to take advantage of your cool new OS. Not to mention good support and frequent updates. |
