MSN fishing for disgruntled AOL users | |

Microsoft is launching a new campaign to pluck away the disaffected from America Online's 34 million-strong subscriber base. The Redmond, Wash.-based software giant will use an application called TrueSwitch, developed by New York-based Esaya, as the main weapon in what it considers its most aggressive attempt to date to close ground between AOL and its own MSN service. TrueSwitch automatically transfers all the information from someone's AOL mailbox, address book and calendar services into MSN Internet Access, Microsoft's ISP. Microsoft's switching campaign specifically targets the many AOL services that people depend on. One of the main reasons people keep their Internet service provider accounts is because they don't want to abandon their e-mail accounts. Other applications such as calendars and address books are meant to keep people on AOL services for longer periods of time and to more consistently lure them back. | ||

This is Netscape all over again.
AOL is sitting on it's pot of gold (huge market share in the IM market) and is refusing to budge (innovate, release new software, try to attact other users, etc). They aren't actively defending their consumers, nor are they seeking new ones. They're lazy. MS is aggressive and will compete and take their customers, then AOL will cry and sue. It's so sad that companies like AOL, Oracle, and SUn are so unwilling to compete and resort to legal action rather than true leadership and competition. |

Just to clarify exactly how bad AOL is... Through work we can get AOL accounts for $4/month, yet few of my coworkers have signed up for it and the few that have bitch about it endlessly.
#6 - Interesting quotes. I have to agree on the broadband thing. With DSL, cable and so forth... the day of the ISP is essentially over. What services does an ISP really offer anyway? All I need is internet connectivity. If I want web hosting, I can get that from someone else located anywhere in the world. If I want usenet news, I can get that from someone else... If I want news, ditto... if I want shopping, ditto. As much as people ridiculed Microsoft for MSN back in '95, and how they didn't "get" the Internet... at least Microsoft came to understand it. AOL is still where they were in '95 and if they don't adapt their business model is going to vanish underneath them. |
