Microsoft Issues Zero-Day IE Warning | |

Microsoft on Wednesday said it is investigating reports of a vulnerability in all supported versions of Internet Explorer, which is to say IE 6 through 8. "The vulnerability exists due to an invalid flag reference within Internet Explorer," Microsoft said in a security advisory. "It is possible under certain conditions for the invalid flag reference to be accessed after an object is deleted. In a specially-crafted attack, in attempting to access a freed object, Internet Explorer can be caused to allow remote code execution." | ||

Has another week gone by already? I thought IE was the safest, fastest, shiniest, fill-in-the-blank-iest browser around. What happened to the alphabet soup of security acronyms that were supposed to save you? More colourful analysis here:

In fact, IE is still one of the safest browsers you can use thanks to Protected Mode.
This exploit, for instance, can only cause a tab-crash on Vista and Win7 if the user has left Protected Mode on - which is the default - in IE 7 or 8. In fact, the only exploits that have bypassed protected mode since the launch of IE 7 have been ones taking advantage of 3rd party plugins (like flash) that are written like crap and provide a way to get around Protected Mode. |

#2: Protected Mode doesn't seem to offer a lot of protection if it can be gotten around so easily.
