Sneaky Cisco plots to take over Microsoft's world | |

Who is Microsoft's biggest competitor? Some say "itself," and with good reason, as Computerworld points out. Microsoft's biggest Windows competitor is pirated Windows. But there's another company that is increasingly setting its sights on Microsoft, and it's doing so largely unnoticed. The company is networking giant Cisco, which through a mix of open-source software and collaboration technology is launching a credible campaign to deep-six Microsoft's desktop dominance. In the past year Cisco has acquired PostPath, which enables it to move Exchange users to its Linux-based, drop-in Exchange clone (PDF), and Jabber, which adds presence and instant messaging. It already had WebEx and more, giving Cisco a well-rounded collaboration story that mimics Microsoft in key places, like Exchange/e-mail, but surpasses it in others. | ||

Cisco's great strength is their ability to acquire and SUCCESSFULLY integrate other companies.
But Cisco likes hardware too much. Its in their blood. That's the same propensity that keeps IBM, Sony, and Apple from being a Microsoft-scale success. This post was edited by mooresa56 on Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at 17:50. |

Practically all of their products are money-losers other than Windows & Office. Most of the world took a pass on Vista. They've been having antitrust issues for the past decade on both sides of the Atlantic. IBM et al may be wise to avoid that kind of success. |

W2K3, WS08 Servers are a money loser? Exchange? SQL? Sharepoint Server? Tools?
It's nearly a third of their business. Entertainment and devices is now making money and that division is going to succeed. Even Silverliight is being used by NetFlix with great success. The image quality is terrific. Clearly, there are changes client side coming and I assess Microsoft, as it moves applications from the client and up into the cloud, will be well positioned to move forward and actually start making good money online. |
