Back in 2002, Jim Allchin was co-president of Microsoft's Platforms and Services Division and was, in his own words, "scared" of the momentum behind Linux, as noted in an email [PDF] sent to several of his direct reports. Why scared? Because Windows was starting to lose to Linux: My conclusion: We are not on a path to win against Linux. We must change some things and we must do it immediately. The current white papers, etc. are too high level and they are not going to cut it. So what did Allchin do? As court documents in the Comes vs. Microsoft antitrust suit demonstrate, and as Roy Schestowitz pointed out on his blog Sunday, Allchin started to buy facts. Lots of facts. | ||

| Nothing to see here. Old news that everyone already knew. Even the microbot brigade knew this, despite all their protestations to the contrary. Microsoft's "Get The FUD" campaign was a shambolic collection of cherry-picked facts, misinformation, torqued case studies and testimonials from partners and other shills in Microsoft's back pocket. |

attack early, and consistently. It usually works, Latch, but it has become so utterly predictable that it has simply become as boring as the anti-Vista mantra...
no surprises here... all the best parts of Linux are ripped off of various commercial software - you know... the stuff people value enough to pay for... Without reward there is no incentive. Without consequence there is satisfaction in having succeeded. When things just "are" people pursue complacency rather than excellence. When "good enough is good enough" it is at best, mediocre. Linux will never succeed, because so much of what it "is" simply offends the human spirit. |

#2: Oh man, I think you're off your meds again. In case you haven't been paying attention, Linux is getting bigger every year -- not smaller. The smart people at Microsoft are right to be afraid of Linux. It's already succeeding, despite your statements to the contrary (more like wishful thinking).
Linux will never succeed, because so much of what it "is" simply offends the human spirit. Oh please, your rhetoric is starting to smell. If anything, Microsoft's crushing of anything in its path, it's unethical behaviour and dirty trick are what offend the human spirit. Your attempts to portray Linux, and by extension the open source movement's concept of sharing, as counter to the human spirit are laughable and, in themselves, offensive. You're so blinded by the concept of things having to cost a lot to have value. It's almost funny. |

On the contrary - truly, the best things in life are free - when they are freely given and that is where the difference is.
When that which has value is devalued, or by force, removed of its value, that is what I find so offensive. Put the word "movement" into anything and you can bet there is a small group of fanatics seeking to control large numbers of innovative and productive people. You are correct, people are right to fear this sort of thing - it smells of control, mediocrity and removing from people their incentives to work hard and succeed. Pursue excellence. Being rewarded for that is a good thing. Choosing to share success and knowledge freely is a better thing, but don't be confused about the difference. |

So you get upset when MS charges a lot for something and then some open source project offers the same thing for free? I can see how you & MS would be upset with that. Put the word "movement" into anything and you can bet there is a small group of fanatics seeking to control large numbers of innovative and productive people. "Movement" simply means it's spurred by the people and not government or corporates. And, as in anything in life, there will always be those who wish to control others or to force their views onto the majority. You only need to look to Microsoft for examples of both. You are correct, people are right to fear this sort of thing - it smells of control, mediocrity and removing from people their incentives to work hard and succeed. Fear what sort of thing, again? The movement or the fringe element? If the latter then that's fine. If the former, then you're just FUDding (unless you're defining 'people' to specifically mean 'people at Microsoft'.) Pursue excellence. Being rewarded for that is a good thing. Choosing to share success and knowledge freely is a better thing, but don't be confused about the difference.
