Report: Microsoft beats out Yahoo, Google on Verizon deal | |

Microsoft is preparing to announce Wednesday it has been selected as the search provider for Verizon mobile phones, beating out archrival Google and Yahoo, according to a Reuters report.
Yahoo shares spiked during mid-day trading as news surfaced that Verizon had chosen a mobile search provider, but then fell back to earth after the Microsoft disclosure.

I wonder how MS did that? Was it their vastly superior search engine technology, or their vastly superior bag of cash? I'll have to ponder that one. Meanwhile, Verizon lines its pockets at the expense of its users search results.

You shouldn't single out MS or Live with respect to accuracy. I've tried many different search engines: Yahoo, Ask, Live and whatever happens to be the new kid on the block. If you're in no hurry, these are fine - you'll ultimately get your answer. If your ass in in the fire then Google gets the call.
I will say that of late I have had much better accuracy with Live maps than Google Maps and this is in older, long-established suburbs. "their vastly superior bag of cash" Yeah, MS is the only company that offers incentives for their product's use. It's called negotiation. Ultimately, MS will have to make a better product if they want to keep Live Search on those phones. |

#3: Yeah, Google Maps kind of blows. In my neck of the woods, a road I drive on every day and have for 3-4 years since it was built is a cow field in Google Maps. I guess they update once a decade or something.
Edit: Ultimately, MS will have to make a better product if they want to keep Live Search on those phones. I don't know. Since Verizon has already sold out for the money over the search results, MS can keep Live there forever just by writing cheques. I don't know how the service there works in regard to whether or not the user can change the default. But as we know from years of Windows, most users won't change the default anyway.
