Apple taunts it, businesses won't touch it, and even Microsoft no longer mentions it by name in ads. Yet Windows Vista, according to Steve Ballmer, has been such a smashing success that Microsoft is unlikely to match it anytime soon.

Man, that's downright scary they would even say this. Really...
I wonder if this is to de-tune Windows 7 expectations. If so, are we seeing the first sighs that Windows 7 won't be all it's cracked up to be? Is this Vista all over again? I'm being serious here... TL |

MS's CEO is quite right - Vista has sold in very well and far more quickly than XP did over a similar period of time; generating far more revenue for the company. Despite radical changes in the platform, which resulted in very slow support from hardware manufacturers and ISV's, Vista has advanced well.
No where is this more evident than in netbooks - I know... I know... what?!?!? Let me explain... for years the drumming from industry press was that the hardware was way out in front of the software... Vista closed that gap and makes great use of modern hardware - and in fact, requires it to run at its best. One need only look at how much better Vista performs and makes use of multi-core systems in support of modern web technologies as compared to the *nix like OS X. Vista trounces OS X opposite FLASH and all Apple can say is that Vista used all cores vice one.... WHAT?!?!?! Of course Vista does, it was designed to and the better question is why OS X DOESN'T use all cores more effectively! A year later, advances in hardware - making powerful systems with plenty of RAM cheap, put multi-core, Vista premium based computers into netbook form factors courtesy of new chips from Intel (Atom) - completely obviating the need to run an older and less capable operating system. That trend will continue as power increases and prices continue to fall in relative terms. Vista was way out in front of hardare/price ratios, but for a very very short time and that is the perspective Steve Ballmer understands. He knows that real-world tests reflect this and being easier to manage and secure, it makes Vista very attractive to all but a very few vocal critics. |
