Ed Bott: Last October, roughly one year after the release to manufacturing of Windows Vista, I did a comparison of how well Windows Vista was living up to its promise of being more secure than its predecessor, Windows XP (see “One year later, Vista really is more secure”). My data source was the Microsoft Security Bulletin Search page, where I tallied up security bulletins rated Critical or Important for the two Windows versions. The result? Vista had an overwhelming edge over XP, with a mere 14 security updates compared to 41 for XP with Service Pack 2 during the same period. | ||

Vista is vastly more secure than XP and counting fewer patches for it is only one small part of the story.
Yes, there are fewer and the severity of which are also lower for Vista. Irrespective of potential vulnerabilities and associated patches, malicious software simply cannot execute on a Vista machine unless approved by an authorized user. Similarly, Remote Code Exploits fail entirely on x64 based versions of Windows Vista, because the address space is randomized (ASLR). Where ASLR and NX, or zero execute (hardware and software DEP) are enabled (the defaults), RCE are rendered ineffective. Using a much more practical real-world method, we have yet to see any form of mal-ware/ad-ware/spy-ware or otherwise undesired software on a Vista machine. As an MS Partner/OEM and seller of managed networks, Vista has been an ever loving Godsend in the context of security and systems management. I reason Ed Bott is being objective in this case, but missing the bigger and more favorable story. |

Bott is a pro-MS guy, so it's very hard to judge anything he writes as objective. |

Now... what's wrong with Ed being "pro-Microsoft"? Ed actually has quite a number of "anti-Microsoft" postings except Ed can see the bigger picture, Ed doesn't hold onto something that happened 10-20 years ago and most importantly Ed doesn't see the world as black and white like you do. #4, Understood.
One of the many things Microsoft got right with Windows Vista is security. It has many cooperating levels that really do keep machines clean and users safer. Candidly, I did not expect to see such great field results. We have and I am grateful for it. |

#5: Yes, that's true to a degree. I'm more of an "anti-MS business practices" guy, not an anti-MS guy in general. None of us here are completely objective. I don't know if I've ever heard you say anything but raves about MS. However, I have praised Microsoft for some of the things they've done and products they've made, whereas others like Bott and some of our own AW users have nothing but thumbs-up for anything MS says or does. That's the difference to me.
