Microsoft’s Genuine Software Initiative Makes Steady Progress on Protecting Customers | |

Computer users have had their share of challenges with software piracy. Which is why, over the past two years, Microsoft has conducted a worldwide effort through its Genuine Software Initiative (GSI). This initiative program focuses the company’s many activities and investments on combating software counterfeiting and other forms of software piracy into a single initiative – protecting customers and partners from the risks and losses associated with counterfeit software. This month, PressPass had a conversation with Cori Hartje, director of the Microsoft Genuine Software Initiative, to discuss the steps Microsoft is taking to address this problem, and for a two-year update on the progress of the GSI. | ||

| Our local newspaper has an online auction site where many individuals sell PCs with pirated XP Corporate Volume installed. I'm the only guy that posts questions about the legality of the steady stream of illegally loaded PCs. Microsoft hasn't done a single thing about stopping the sales; even after being informed of the sellers e-mail address, auction number, etc. Microsoft’s efforts are "feel good", and do not attack the huge base of small sellers of illegal installations. |

Yeah, I realize the value of it evey damned time I have to take a clients machine to Office Update and spend the next 5 minutes accepting ActiveX paranoia crap installs, which fail on several occasions, and have to start over.
Eventually, I get to what I was after. |

@2, We're with you on this one. We have seen enough of it to make us just ill.
It is very hard selling solid machines and networks in against disc loaded pricing from small sellers that break the law. The biggest crap we have seen is among low cost systems from Dell, which shipped with Vista Home Premium that were disc loaded with XP Professional and without any legit license to go along with it. Many small businesses have been burned this way and we have seen a ton of it. Small sellers do it and small integrators do it and they all seem to be in the "bad Vista" camp. It's easy to see why when they are stealing like this and they always ship affected systems in without any media, backup discs or documentation. So fixing such messes is made harder on legit companies that obey the law. And you're right, Microsoft has done nothing about it and doesn't even respond to reports. There is very little worse than a thief! |

Is it possibe that nobody at MS understand that the only outcome of statements like this is to further upset legit users?

#5: While I agree with the meat of your post, there are lots of things worse than a thief.
#6: That's the joy of being a monopoly; you don't need to care what your customers think. And, after being in that position for a long time, you start to take on the arrogant mindset that your customers will think what you tell them to think. |
