Microsoft is lobbying the computing industry to start moving the Internet to the next-generation underpinnings that will lay the groundwork for much richer networking. At its WinHEC conference here, Microsoft executives urged hardware and software engineers to support IPv6, a replacement of the IPv4 version of Internet Protocol that underlies all communications across the Internet. IPv6's chief benefit is enabling a vastly larger number of computing devices to connect to the network by essentially lifting IPv4's limited number of addresses. | ||

| What's so bad about it? IPv6 data can be routed through the old IPv4, so the upgrade can be incremental without much trouble. |

| What they should do is migrate the backbone and major services to IPv6 first, then that gives the ISP's and users time to buy new NIC's and Routers and Switches and all to make the switch. |

| 6 hopefully it will just require a driver update. And maybe all routers and switches can be updated via firmware. Not really sure, I have not looked into it that much. But a year ago I had heard that the backbone of the Internet was already being upgraded to IPv6. |

| If I'm not mistaken Windows2000 already supports IPv6, so I suppose ME and XP do too. |

I agree is about time for ip6..
btw win2000\NT4 has support for ip6.. just download it from microsoft research. I think ip6 will go mainstream around the longhorn time frame.. 18-24 months out I think. No new nics are needed, and technically alot of hardware updates are not even needed to be compatible.. Thought the best benifit will happen when most networks are 100% ipv6. I've been insisting at least base level ipv6 support in all new equipment purchases this year. You'd be suprised at how many product have the support already or will with there next major 'revision'. Guys dont speculate.. read up.. 6bone.net I think is a good site. #13 You would get an address space that could contain 65000 of your own subnets and each hold 16million devices as I recall.. (it's been a few weeks since I checked. That could be wrong) but I do know you get 64 or 68 of the 128bits for your self. You guys should give it a try.. though getting up and running requires some emailing and phone calling people.. but hey so did arpa-net. :) |

not to mention that XP already has IP6 on the install. You just have to run the ipv6 install.
It is a shame they are not working on a 9x version. not that I don't blame them, we do need to get rid of the DOS platforms as quickly as possible:) My internal network is moving over ti ipv6 I believe. as soon as I figure all the logistics for it. Unfortantly Linksys cable router doesn't support it in the dhcp yet. so have to use another format for it:( el |
