Xbox 360 Becomes First Video Game Console Ever to Invite the World to Create Original Games and Share Online With Millions
Time: 13:56 EST/18:56 GMT | News Source: Press Release | Posted By: Byron Hinson

In a landmark announcement during the keynote address at the annual Game Developers Conference (GDC), Microsoft Corp. promised to soon allow Xbox LIVE members to play, rate and share community-created games. As the first in the industry to pioneer high-speed online gaming and high-definition games, Xbox 360 once again broke new ground by introducing a new, open distribution service for games created by the community and soon playable by its 10 million Xbox LIVE members. Community-created games on Xbox LIVE will quickly double the size of the Xbox 360 game library. By the end of 2008, Xbox 360 owners will have access to more than 1,000 games, making it the largest, most creatively diverse library across all next-generation platforms.

It may also be the first video game system to never, ever make a profit in its entire history.

Thought that was the xbox

The last two quarters has seen the entertainment division make a profit for MS.

"The operating income (profit) of the division was US$357 million for the quarter and US$524 million for the last two quarters combined."

This really has nothing to do with the story though. I guess it is a slow news day when Latch has to go looking for ways to slag MS.

#4 By 3 (86.1.38.147) at 2/20/2008 3:45:25 PM
They had to put aside 1 billion for the broken 360's though - that has to be added into it - thus no profits yet.

Technically, from an accounting point of view that is a writedown and does not effect the profits. But generally, the entertainment group is still something like 7 billion in the hole with all the loses it has had. I was just pointing out that for some quarters it has actually made a profit to counter Latch's claim that it had never, ever made a profit.

It will also be interesting to see what happens in the HD DVD drive "issue" by Microsoft... plus last month the PS3 out sold the 360... interesting times ahead for the 360 me thinks!

And I'll continue to dream of the day when MS gets rid of the Xbox and makes Windows gaming it's no.1 and exclusively focussed gaming platform, after killing Sony and buying out Nintendo.

I heard MS offered Electronic Arts $1bil? Anyone hear about this?

#5: I'm no accountant, but how can they make a profit if they're losing $100-150 per unit sold?

#7: You're more right than you think. MS would stop caring about their consoles the very instant they realize they've taken over the console market. Good thing they won't ever take over the market. MS has a long history of having very limited success when they are unable to leverage their OS monopoly to enter new markets.

#3 the entertainment division encompasses more than the xbox. Which explains why the xbox is losing money while the division is making money.

The console business is like this. They sell the hardware at a loss in order to get consoles out there. The real money is in the games. It has always been like this. The wii is one of the few where the hardware was sold at a profit right from the beginning. As the cost of manufacturing drops over the lifetime of the console eventually they will break even and then will make money on the hardware. Look at the PS3 - there were estimates on release it was costing 800-900 to make each one. They were taking a huge loss on them. But just because they take a loss on the hardware doesn't mean the division doesn't make money.

#12 "The console business is like this.".... "The wii is one of the few"...
Weren't all of Nintendo's consoles sold for profit from the very beginning? Just because Microsoft and Sony choose to lose millions of $$$ does not make it "the console business". I'm fairly certain that up until the Dreamcast, Sega didn't sell any of their consoles at a loss either.

Let us know when the XBOX starts to make a profit... it's nice to have enough money in the bank that you can finance a project that consistently loses you money and stay in business.

I don't get your argument. The xbox 360 is a game system and doesn't exist as the hardware itself. They sell the hardware at a loss but overall the division is making money because of the games, online play etc. Consoles are all about getting them into the hands of people so they buy games. So what if they take a loss on each one if people are going to spend 5-10 times that on other products related to the initial hardware purchase. What I said still stands. The entertainment division has made a profit for the last 2 quarters even though the hardware itself may be sold at a loss.

Nintendo tried a completely different thing with the wii and succeeded but functionally the wii is in a way lower class then the other consoles. Bringing up Sega doesn't strengthen your argument either. The console business today is completely different then it was 10 years ago. Sony's success proves that you can take a loss initially on the hardware but in the long wrong make a ton of money. I don't think investors are going to care much if overall the division is making money.

#15 By 3746 (72.12.161.38) at 2/22/2008 9:40:21 AM
Also I just want to point out too that the guesstimate that they are still losing money on each 360 they sell is probably false. Even by the end of 2006 it looked like they are in the black in regards to selling the hardware itself and what the individual components cost.

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20061116-8239.html

At this point with they are probably easily in the black. But none of these numbers can be verified because MS does not release their manufacturing costs on the hardware.

Kinda sad that we're on a MS News site and nobody here seems to realize what MS wants to make money doing. Selling software. They don't care about losing money on the X-Box hardware since they make most of their money on the games. If you consider simply the X-Box console in a vacuum they have yet to make a profit. But running that loss the X-Box has formed an entire new form of income and has been making them money. Context is a beautiful thing.

I came in at 11am on a Sunday discount designer bags and there was quite a crowd and not much line control. Once the doors cheap designer bags opened the crowd swarmed in and people at the back of the line cheap designer bags were being helped before the people at the front! this isn't a huge gripe for me discount designer bags because I know how self important people can be but it did dock discount designer handbags one star.
