Java and .NET Battle for the Web's Future | |

Rob Perry of the Yankee Group told NewsFactor that Microsoft's reputation for having products that do not scale or meet enterprise standards will benefit Java. A series of high-profile legal battles and a well-documented feud have kept Microsoft and Sun Microsystems in the spotlight, and with the preliminary release of .NET , the battle has acquired new intensity. But despite the fight between Sun's Java and Microsoft's .NET, further fueled by a dispute over the exclusion of Java from Microsoft's Windows XP software, some analysts agreed that Java is alive and well. Deborah Hess, senior research analyst at Gartner, told NewsFactor that Java's maturity and proven track record will keep Sun's programming language very much at the forefront of development technology. | ||

James,
I haven't figured that out yet. Why can't we all just get along? But this one-size-fits-all attitude seems to be coming from the Java proponents, moreso than the Microsoft proponents. I also get the feeling that the Java crowd is really scared of .Net. Certainly that's the attitude being put forward by Sun in their attacks on Microsoft. You can tell Gosling is really upset, and so on. |

This isn't just about Java the language, this is about Java the Framework like .NET the framework.
They do have very similar overlapping features, and a bunch of non-overlapping features. Unfortunately for Java, .NET's non-overlapping features are hot and Java's non-overlapping features are luke warm. I don't believe either will "win", though .NET will have more use and wider distribution in the near future. Java is a good technology in general and will still hold on to its markets (mainly cross-platform Unix and embedded development). |

#8 - I would hardly call being able to run on 95% of the computers in the world today to be a signifigant limitation.

#6 - Corba was a good idea, but was poorly implemented. It is far too easy to create "proprietary" corba interfaces for services, thereby locking out some clients. In practice, Corba is only marginally better than simply sharing your proprietary protocols and data formats.
XML Web Services fixes that. Java does currently have various SOAP implementations available to it, which allows Java developers to use XML Web Services just as .NET developers do. The difference is the easy of use. In .NET, I can take an existing component, and make it a web service with a single line of code. That's simply impossible in Java... at least of yet. In addition, one has to write all their own SOAP functionality to utilize the web service, and getting that all hashed out takes a relatively substantial amount of time when you add up every point where an XML Web Service could be utilized. It eventually becomes cost prohibitive. Again, .NET gets past that by doing all the work for you. (You can, of course, do it or modifiy it yourself, if you like.) The only other Web Services framework out there that comes close to .NET is IBM's WebSphere suite... it's actually quite good. I would say it's about 65% of what .NET is, which isn't bad at all considering that they've had only a fraction of the 2 years Microsoft had to develop .NET. |

| I was checking out Rotor a bit to see how close it is to being the "Mac port" of .Net--besides not really containing any classes, it only compiles for x86 BSD... That can be overcome relatively easily enough... Mac's OS also doesn't implement pthreads--bigger problem: either Mac OS X needs pthreads first, or Rotor has to be adapted for that... then there is the issue of the Mach microkernal instead of pure BSD... In terms of anyone being interested in Rotor on the Mac, it's a non-starter for a while... Maybe Microsoft should give Corel a hand with it... |
