Ben has posted his review of Microsoft SharePoint Team Services. Here is an excerpt: Lately I have been really impressed at some of the software Microsoft has been putting out for the web. SharePoint Team Services is a new technology that came out with FrontPage 2002 (XP). Don’t confuse this with SharePoint Portal Server which provides some of the same functionality but I will cover that in a future review. What is SharePoint Team Services? Team Services is a team website that makes it incredibly easy to communicate with your team. The best part about SharePoint is that you can do most if not all of your tasks from any standard web browser. Users don’t need to know anything about HTML or programming. They can upload documents create links; participate in discussion groups just to name a few things that Team Services does. | ||

I don't ever start out assuming a product is good. I use it then judge it on its merits whether it be MS software, Apple Software, Linux, Lego's etc . . . I think SharePoint Team Services is great. If the information on the sharepoint server is difficult for you to find I think that has more to do with how you organized your site than inherent limitations in SharePoint. The web is totally customizable and you can throw links wherever you need them. If information is hard to find that is your fault when you set it up.
There is no mechanism setup to allow two or more people to share the same documents. But you would have the same problem on just a regular file share. I recommend using the Send For Review option within the office application you want to share out. SharePoint Portal Server is more advanced and takes care of some of those needs. The discussion group feature is a basic discussion forum. It doesn't have all of the advanced features of other forums but the basic functionaility is there and works great. I use Team Services daily and think I know a little bit about it. I suggest you take a look at it again. As for 1.0 software from Microsoft I think they did a bang up job on this one. Could it be better? Sure it could, but in its present incarnation it works well and fulfills my needs. |

| #4 SharePoint can't touch e-room as far as features go. It depends on what your needs are to determine which one is better, and how much money you can spend. SharePoint is relatively inexpensive. eRoom is very expensive. Hosting for SharePoint is pretty cheap eRoom.Net charges $250 a month. |

Well the machine I tested on was a Dimension XPS R400. Not exactly a speed demon there and the performance was more than adequate.
Some of the other things mentioned by people above aren't really in the same class as this. This is more for people that are already FrontPage users. If you do your own development custom coding etc . . . Then this probably isn't going to be a solution for you. However, if you don't want to program, don't have the time, and don't have a lot of money then SharePoint can provide you with a lot of functionality for very little cost. My goal was just just to show people what Team Services was and how they might be able to incorporate it into their organizations. Like I said we use it and like it a lot. For us it is an excellent solution 1.0 or not. |

I have been contemplating the use of Sharepoint for our team website. I haven't investigated to see how well it works. On paper and in the demos I've seen I think it would be acceptable for what I wish to do.

We use SharePoint TS to share files with off-site employees. At this point, only on-site people login as publishers. Users use their existing Windows domain account, because this particular web server is a domain member server. I manage all of our servers, so I actually set up the first website.
It was very easy to install and connect to our existing SQL Server 7.0 server. All it takes is an extra command line switch, and it installs without MSDE. Then, extend an IIS website using the web-based administrator, and create a Sharepoint web in Frontpage 2002. You're up and running! Just be sure to turn on Indexing service so you can search the file libraries. There are, of course, a few minor bugs in the software, but nothing that breaks the site. But most importantly, if you wanted to program the equivalent features yourself, it would be very expensive and time consuming. And, if you're a Linux/Unix person, you wouldn't even be able to implement some of it's features. Or, have a system that seemlessly integrates with existing infrustructure. 2 features that make this product awesome: -Adding Custom fields, including drop-downs, of different data types to the document metadata for a document library. -You can make fields REQUIRED, so when a user uploads a file, he must enter complete data about the file.
