Inc., a leading specialty retailer of consumer electronics, computers and applications, has selected multiple Microsoft® technologies to help its field technicians and consultants increase productivity, better understand and serve consumers and small businesses, and develop stronger relationships with its customers. The retailer’s Geek Squad service team, a group of more than 11,000 specially trained Agents who solve computer problems for customers by visiting their homes and small businesses, is now using 3,000 Windows Mobile®-powered Smartphones to schedule and route customer service calls, to improve communication and collaboration capabilities, and to easily access Internet-based technical content. In addition, Best Buy For Business — a growing unit of more than 1,000 consultants who sell, implement and support solutions for small-business customers — is now using Microsoft Dynamics™ CRM 3.0 in-house as part of a comprehensive solution for supporting its complex sales cycle. | ||

Who the heck even uses these guys as IT support? I mean the geek squad? In Canada furture shop (owned by best buy) has a similar thing called Nerds on Site. The name alone is embarrassing as is their stupid red VW beetles. Every company I know that have used them has had a bad experience. I am surprised their employees can figure out how to use the smart phones. I mean they don't seem very handy with technology. I don't know maybe the geek squad in the US hires better people. | #3 Your comments mirror many that local people have related to me about the Geek Squid. No doubt some are excellent. I have heard complaints about the local Best Buy Geek Squids telling several people that they needed to buy a new surge suppressor as the joules were just about used up. One rep told a customer of mine that the units come with so many joules installed. These get used every time there is a power surge, until there are no more joules left to use. WTF? An actual Best Buy Geek Squid person gave a customer of mine this ridiculous advice. She purchased a UPS from me. Another customer overheard someone else being old the same lie about joules. Not all of the Squids can be this bad. |

#3, We have to be careful here.. while the GS guy was wrong, technically, depending upon what type of surge suppressor he was referring to, he would have been correct.
Many suppressors use a gas discharge arrestor. These take the form of a gas tube, or tubes in some cases and they work very simply - if a circuit receives high enough voltage, it is high enough to ionize the gas inside the tube(s). This results in a highly efficient conductor, which then passes the voltage to ground [being certain of course the surpressor has a path and is plugged into a wall outlet that has an earth ground - and not into an extension cord, for example]. Others use series based circuits which slow electrical signals on the line and store the excess, vice passing it over another circuit. Very common units use a MOV, or metal oxide varistor, which also uses a diversion method. The important thing to note is that like any electrical circuit - they move, bend and are exposed to a lot of heat and they do wear out. Those using gas based diversion, or some other method may be less effective and prone to failure after extended use, but regardless, they do wear. We recommend 18 to 23 months before scheduled replacement for any such device that one may depend upon to protect important systems - grant it, we see a great many storms each season and our homes are exposed to veyr powerful electrical storms. |

Well I have heard some great stories from the geek squad's retarded canadian cousin Nerds on Site. I don't think they hire the highest quality people. Most of them are probably young and inexperinced and told to use the same lines. I mean the average person is not going to have a clue when someone uses geek speak even if they are talking right out of their ass. So they probably never get called on it and they keep using it.
Still you think that businesses would be able to find better IT service then the geek squad. |

lol, this no more than wishfull thinking on their part.
They might be able to form a few strategic patternships but I doubt if anything more will become of this idea |

I'm currently working on my new tools disc which is almost a direct ripoff of the Geek Squad MRI disc they use. It's not hard since they use all the sysinternals (MS) tools. I have a long and very interesting history with this company and enjoy any opportunity to expose the incometence of it's employees. Geek Squad is just a fancy name for Best Buy techs. They bought the Geek Squad brand because the in-store technicians had such a bad reputation. It's not going to take long for the Geek Squad name to earn the same reputation.
What's more profitable, a tech who is exceptionally proficient in all he does and fixes problems in less than an hour, or a tech who is only slightly more knowledgeable than the person who he is helping? If somebody is out there scratching their heads for 3 hours, the customer pays for it. It's bad ethics but it's how they run their business. |

| #4, You are operating under the assumption that somebody in Best Buy's employ understands more than 3 words of your post. If it were a written exam, I'm sure one of their Secret Agents would recommend adding more "Jewels" to your power strip. |

#4, LOL. Curious, is Apple's Genius Bar staff any better - anyone dealt with them? I read some sad stuff from one such tech over on ARS Technia, but he seemed to be in the minority.
Dealing with the customers we support each day, we see quite a lot, and most issues arise and are based upon what third party vendors induce - I spent the better part of the day mitigating what one had done and while we can normally manage their integration pretty well, we can't in all cases - not up front in any case and on occasion, have to deal with the mess after the fact. I imagine the GS guys at BB are likely worse than many vendors we've supported that are more sales guys than they are technicians. |
