PS3 and Wii Outsell a Years Worth of Xbox 360's in Japan
Time: 14:00 EST/19:00 GMT | News Source: ActiveXbox.com | Posted By: Byron Hinson

01 - Wii - 350,358 (350,358)
02 - Nintendo DS Lite - 176,901 (6,132,183)
03 - PlayStation 3 - 31,436 (187,836)
04 - PlayStation Portable - 23,917 (4,246,974)
05 - PlayStation 2 - 23,115 (20,002,291)
06 - Xbox 360 - 4,053 (178,069)
07 - Game Boy Advance SP - 1,572 (5,907,676)
08 - Game Boy Micro - 1,252 (552,408)
09 - GameCube - 821 (4,165,650)
10 - Nintendo DS - 140 (6,581,548)

The Wii has sold more consoles in one week than Microsoft has done in 56 weeks. With the release of Blue Dragon this week in Japan, this could well be the week that decides where the Xbox 360 will lay in the charts for the rest of its lifespan. The Nintendo Wii has already sold over 1.7 million units which is 1/4 of the Xbox 360's total - in just 3 weeks. The PS3 is meanwhile lingering in 3rd place behind the Xbox 360. Looks like poor sales over Christmas for Sony due to their lack of hardware out to stores.

The PS3 isn't in 3rd only because of lack of hardware. In fact, many Walmarts in smaller towns have had them sitting on shelves (including our city of Madison). Much of the feedback has been people are not buying because of the $500/$600 price tag.

Last check, the Best Buy in Waterloo, IA, has like 10 PS3s in a pile...no Wii however. That price-point is too high on the PS3 and too attractive on the Wii.

I have a Wii, and until the PS3 is sub-$300 I won't pick one up.

#6 By 135 (75.73.90.215) at 12/11/2006 6:45:11 PM
I'm waiting for the XBox 360 and PS3 to hit $150, then I'll buy.

I figure it'll be two years from now on ebay.

in other news... pc's outsell all game systems possibly 1000 to 1.

now comparing sales of moderate to high end video cards to gaming systems, that would be interesting.

This is in Japan...and we care because........?

What are the US or EU sales numbers?

The Japanese buy Nintendo and Sony, not neccessarily because they are better, but because they are Japanese companies.

jimlat, here are some US numbers, released today...

"Market researchers at NPD said 511,000 Xbox consoles were sold in November, compared with 476,000 Wii units and 195,000 PS3s. "

so, with a half-price console, and crazy launch hype... nintendo managed to still lose out to Microsoft. They were supply-constrained, of course. But those Xbox numbers were simply UNTHINKABLE 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or more years ago.

ps... hope you console folks are following this site. funny/sad/alarming stuff http://www.wiihaveaproblem.com/

#9...thanks...precisely my point......Japan sales numbers are meaningless in the US....

#12 By 3 (62.253.128.14) at 12/12/2006 11:25:24 AM
But overall sales are meaningful for most people apart from the US I guess. Gaining 1/4 of sales on a console that has been out over a year in just 3 weeks is an excellent achivement for Nintendo and word of mouth will only push it on as its an excellent machine. Don't get me wrong though, the Xbox 360 is fantastic and deserves to be #1, but I really really hope Nintendo take the 2nd spot.

#13 By 12071 (203.185.215.144) at 12/12/2006 11:07:24 PM
#9 Those numbers are great you just forgot one tiny little bit of information:

1) The Wii was released on November 19th - so the numbers for "November" really only include 12 days as oppose to 30 for the XBox 360.
2) The Wii was completely sold out meaning that even if it were possible, it couldn't sell anymore than 476,000 units in those 12 days.

So it's not struggling at all against the XBox nor the PS3. Personally I hope that Nintendo get #1 or #2 (they deserve it) and keep producing excellent games.

#14 By 3653 (68.52.143.149) at 12/13/2006 3:15:43 AM
kabuki, i wasn't trying to mislead. In reality, the wii went on sale much sooner than November 19th, via pre-ordering. I'm quite certain a large percentage of the available systems were sold long before Nov 19.

regarding your second point. what part of "They were supply-constrained" did you not understand?

Regarding the wii... even $250 is overpriced considering you are getting the equivalent of a gamecube with a $25 wii sensor bar, and a $35 wiimote. They did some good marketing, selling what amounts to a PERIPHERAL... but calling it a new system.

#15 Well we can argue whether pre-orders count or not but the fact is that Nintendo sold 93% units in 40% of the time. I wouldn't count that as losing out to anybody, especially all the hype surrounding the PS3 and how well it was supposed to do... if they could manufacture it quickly enough.

Spec wise it's a lot more powerful than the GameCube but nowhere near the XBox and PS3 and you're right - they did a lot of right things, you only need to look around at all the people playing the Wii, and having actual FUN doing it, that otherwise wouldn't have thought about playing video games. Or people like me who either refuse to pay a ridiculous amount of money or simply don't have the time to devote to learning the 5 million button mashing combinations required to play a modern game because someone somewhere thought that if they throw in enough options into a game then it's playability will be extended. And that's great for those sort of gamers, the ones that demand the best graphics imaginable and complain about anything less. I like games for their gameplay - sure graphics are nice, but you know what, I'll take gameplay over graphics any day of the week.

Time will only tell how this pans out, but as I watch my daughter playing on the Wii, when the last thing she was ever interested in was games, I can't see how this can possibly turn out badly for Nintendo. We'll see how much the next gen systems from Sony and Microsoft copy...

The funny thing is, my 7 year old son just loves his 360. In fact, he played a Wii at our local BestBuy and asked me if it was for babies!

One would think that a $250 Wii or a $129 PS2 would sell more than a $400 Xbox 360 or $600 PS3. Common sense there.

#17 By 12071 (203.217.94.252) at 12/13/2006 9:32:34 AM
#16 "asked me if it was for babies!"
See that's the thing... the only people I hear making such comments are the self regarded hard core gamers (whatever that actually means - maybe it means you spend more than 4 hours a day playing games), everyone else has the exact opposite opinion especially after having played. For instance you don't see many girls even remotely interested in an XBox, yet plenty of them are playing the Wii. But we're two very different markets and that's fine - you enjoy your XBox and my whole family will enjoy our Wii.

"Common sense there."
Funny how your common sense doesn't apply to the numbers at the top of this page! PS3 outsold the PS2 even thought it's priced much higher. The Wii outsold the DS even though it's priced much higher. Perhaps there's just more DEMAND for it!

#18 By 3 (62.253.128.14) at 12/13/2006 9:39:59 AM
#17 - there is no such thing as a hardcore gamer, if there was people who played WoW, Football Manager and games like that would be called hardcore. People like to think they are hardcore when they say they play Gears of War or Call of Duty all the time, if thats hardcore I'm glad i'm not!

As you say, the two markets are different I guess, I have more family fun with the Wii than I do the Xbox 360, friends join in with the Wii, women join in too as do children, that doesn't happen around an Xbox 360 at the moment. Yeah I know someone will pipe in and say it happens online on the 360, but I don't know many games other than Uno which I find women and children really enjoying.

As for the Wii, its selling well simply due to demand, not the price at the moment. The price isn't as low as it should have been for the console either, so the demand is excellent.

Gates had it right when he was talking about Sony's launch period. Something like "people would buy a sony brick" during that time. Same for nintendo. Launch periods are unique. Microsoft seems to understand this when they say the real battle is Christmas 2007 when all competitors have supply. Microsoft's growing profit/console makes for a great price bomb in 2007. Time will tell.
