For all those people saying Vista will cost $300 or more, here is a dose of reality. You can now buy Windows Media Center Edition 2005 for $110 and get a free upgrade to Windows Vista Home Premium edition. Note that this is NOT a recommendation to buy or to not buy. It is simply a reality check on what Windows Vista will cost. Chances are, many new MCE (Media Center Edition) PCs this Christmas will come with free upgrade coupons to Windows Vista Home Premium edition. If you are in the market for a retail copy of Windows, this is one possibility you might consider. AW: Note that this offer applies to OEM copies of Microsoft Windows. | ||

But... from what I've read, you can't use the "upgrade" feature in Vista to upgrade the Home Premium edition to Ultimate. That's pretty dumb.
Anyone have any idea what the OEM prices are going to be for Vista? Will you still be able to purchase them from Newegg with hardware? |

| I'd guess that the OEM prices for Vista will be about the same as their XP counterparts since that's the case for retail copies. I see no reason why Vista OEM wouldn't be available from Newegg, but have no specific info. |

I don't know whp your sources are, but we tested this scenario, and had no problems.

We were also waiting for an answer from Microsoft as to why it hasn't mentioned anything about discounts for purchasers who want to upgrade to it's new top of the range product, Vista Ultimate. Just in from Microsoft in response to our question is the following: "There is currently no upgrade path under the Tech Guarantee programs from Windows XP to Ultimate, since Vista Ultimate is an entirely new high end product with significant functionality and value-added compared to existing high end Windows XP product." |

These are two different issues.
You can upgrade from a lower SKU to Ultimate, but MS won't be providing a coupon or discount under their Technology Guarantee program to do it. You'll have to pay the full upgrade price from whatever channel you purchase it (retail or OEM). |

| I think I see what you're saying (sorry that I wasn't clearer in #1; I meant specifically the "Tech Guarantee" program). So... my question is this: if you purchase MCE now for $110 with the free upgrade to Home Premium and then upgrade your computer, can you use the built-in upgrade feature within Vista to upgrade to Ultimate? And if so, do you pay the incremental difference (or some discounted cost), or do you pay full price? |

| #6, you will not pay the Full price, as far as I know it will be the incremental difference between Premium and Ultimate. |
