Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server and SQL Server 2000: Premium in Everything But the Price | |

Microsoft Corp. and Unisys Corp. have just demonstrated that the largest Web-based enterprises can run their ERP applications with power and speed - without paying a UNIX-premium price. In an industry-standard benchmark (http://www.unisys.com/news/releases/2001/feb/02267066.asp), a 16-processor Unisys e@ction Enterprise Server ES7000 system, running Microsoft® SQL Server™ 2000 Enterprise Edition and Windows® 2000 Datacenter Server, simulated a workload of 10,400 mySAP.com users with an average response time of 1.83 seconds. "This result shows that with the Unisys ES7000, Windows 2000 Datacenter Server and SQL Server 2000, everything needed to meet the requirements of the most demanding SAP installations is in place and proven," said Gordon Mangione, vice president for SQL Server. "It offers enterprises further assurance that they no longer have to pay the UNIX premium for high-performance SAP solutions or be locked into proprietary platform technology." | ||

| unfortunately, this press release only mentioned how this setup performed against other Windows-based SAP configurations. How does it measure against other non-Windows setups? I remember a while back where Win2K 3-teir setups nuked all the Unix competition, but do those numbers still stand tall? If so, then this setup just blew Unix further out of the competition. |

| What is the price per license of datacenter? It is OEM only, but what is the OEM cost? They never state the price of DataCenter, and when I visit the 3rd party OEMs they are not clear either. |

| I've heard numbers ranging from $10k - 20k per processor. Mind you, Microsoft GUARANTEES 99.9% uptime. Some OEMs actually guarantee four and five nines using Win2K DC. For large organizations, the cost of the OS (even at 20k per proc) is negligable to the cost of downtime. I consulted for several companies back a couple years ago who would suffer $1000/minute if some of their servers went down. |
