New Windows, same old delays? XP beta hits snag | |

Although it is common for software companies to miss their internal release schedules, many customers and business partners still look to these schedules for planning purposes. That's particularly true in Microsoft's case. The software giant has earned a notorious reputation over the years for missing its release targets. And it looks as if it will be business as usual for Windows XP, which is the successor to Windows Millennium Edition and Windows 2000 Professional, formerly code-named Whistler. But Office XP, the product formerly known as Office 10, seems to be more on track, testers said. | ||

| I agree people take far more notice of the Windows delays than any other software. What would people prefer - a product that reaches its first deadlines and remains exceedingly buggy or one that ships later but is far more stable. |

| Release targets are marketing-driven anyhow. Working as a developer for a software company, I know the rediculousness involved in setting arbitrary and rediculous release dates. In the end, it always comes down to "ship it broken, or wait and ship it working". Besides, WHAT DO THESE PEOPLE WANT?! The Windows XP cycle was only like 1 year or 1.5 years. Windows 2000 was 5 years in the making! MS went from a 5 year monolithic cycle to <2 years. If it's 3 months late, it's still a record breaker! |

| Yeah it does seem a short design span but as #5 said, it is being based on Windows 2000/NT and not a completly new kernel. |
