Pinned: Microsoft delays Windows XP Service Pack 3 from 2006 to 2007! | |

Two weeks ago I posted my annual list of what we can expect for this year. WinXP SP3 was also mentioned in the list, I put it in summer 2006 as I had several sources for this, including this official list. Now it seems Microsoft silently changed the release date to 2007, while the publishing date of the list remains unchanged. Maybe I checked the list before that date, but I'm quite sure I didn't. Last year in April, Ballmer said windows XP sp3 would ship before "Longhorn" comes out. Now it will be a year later: 2nd half or 2007!! | ||

| This doesn't surprise me. MS has said that SP3 would be the final SP for XP and the final SPs for MS OSes are usually released after the successor OS (in this case, Windows Vista) is available. |

| The final SP? What is it with them? NT 4.0 got six service packs (originally supposed to have 7), Windows 2000 only made it to 4 and now XP only getting 3 even though it's one of the longest lived versions of Windows yet? With this kind of support do they really expect me to buy Vista... |

I think the number of packs is misleading. You would have to look at the amount of fixes in each one. Maybe they are going to longer between release and have more in each one? Maybe their is less to fix? But just saying they when from 6 to 4 to 3 is misleading. I mean XP sp2 is a huge update and more then just a SP.
I would look for the info myself but i am lazy. |

The number of service packs per OS may have a lot to do with the maturation of the automatic updates system. NT4 didn't have automatic updates, so all patches needed to be acquired (downloaded or ordered) and applied manually. I imagine that most businesses patched their computers only when SPs came out because of the hassle involved (ex. scripting batch files to run dozens of small patches). Automatic Updates (and SUS) were introduced with 2000 and, soon after, with XP, making the frequency of SPs less-important because it was as easy as cake to keep systems up-to-date in-between SP releases. The idea and importance of the service pack is a lot less significant nowadays than it was back in the NT/9x days. This post was edited by Osprey on Tuesday, January 17, 2006 at 02:35. |

| Don't forget that SP add often more than patching a hole, a security flaw. |
