Microsoft's settlement with RealNetworks on Tuesday eliminates one lingering headache for the embattled software maker, but other legal migraines remain. Most prominent is the European Union's ongoing pursuit of Microsoft through the courts. In March 2004, then-European Competition Commissioner Mario Monti levied a 497 million euro ($596 million) fine after ruling that the company had unfairly wielded its market power against rivals. | ||

| Is the EU just trying to rise a little money for their broken bank accounts? How can they within the law fine an US company for unfairly wielding it's market power? That what open markets is all about. Walmart better watchout; they're next. |

| Radcoe: Any entity, from the US or any other country, doing business in another country or commonwealth is subject to the laws and regulations in that region. The regulators are not tied into the US system and can legally (not necessarily wisely) do whatever they want. If they pass repressive regulations, in time business will leave and their economy will suffer. In the USA, post Enron, terribly strict and expensive (added seven figures worth of accounting costs) corporate governance regulations were put into effect. This had the unintended effect of driving out many smaller foreign business's from the USA. The effects work both ways. |
