We're all waiting to see for ourselves what Microsoft's fabled Longhorn is all about, but it seems that there’s more fantasy than reality in the officials’ statements regarding the future OS. According to Scott Spanbauer, who has tested the 64-bit version of the latest code released to developers (Longhorn build 5048) for PC World, the OS has some impressive visual touches, including the kinds of translucent objects found now in Apple's OS X, and more advanced file searching capabilities. Yet, important breakthroughs in productivity are nowhere to be seen, and the promised features such as security improvements and smarter connections to handheld devices are still a myth. | ||

WAIT FOR BETA -- BETA 2 will be where all the good stuff starts to get released.
5048 is still a dev release - its biggest thing is the finalization of WDF, and a couple of other things needed to do dev for the Longhorn platform. 5048 is not a public Beta for regular use! Now, after Beta 2, if this were still true then it would be time to worry. Also, take a look at the services - look at how many have been reduced from LocalSystem. Its the stuff you wont see/play with that I want! |

| Regarding stuff you won't see... I can't wait for the new version of Task Scheduler. That's a perfect example of one of the classic sleeper features that won't get any press coverage, but will make so many customers very happy. |
