With its lucrative Office suite in decline, Microsoft is feeling the heat. Once accountable for about 50 percent of Microsoft's revenues, Office contributed less than one-third of the company's revenues throughout 2004, and increased competition from low-cost options such as Corel WordPerfect Office 12 and Sun's StarOffice/OpenOffice.org tandem are starting to hurt as well. But Microsoft's biggest competition in the office productivity space, ironically, comes from within: Older versions of the Office suite, including Office 2000, XP, and 2003, are often cited by customers as being good enough. Thus, businesses aren't upgrading to new Office versions as quickly as they used to. And most now skip a version or two before upgrading. | ||

They need to clean up and optimize what the HAVE, not pile on yet more new features few have asked for or needs.
Office has become an pig. A bloated pig. Outlook 2003 needs SERIOUS optimizations in the code. The features are nice, but if the thing gets any slower or chokes any more often it will become useless. It's rare that I see such an unresponsive program as Outlook 2003. It's horrible in this regard. What's the purpose of having the new 20GB PST format when the system chokes on it before it reaches 2GB, which was the limit of the 97-2002 versions? I dread what users will do with these things, and the dreaded "My system is slow" trouble tickets that will arise from it. |

TL - try getting rid of PSTs. Many companies offer programs that will suck PSTs into the IS.
Also, OL2K3 is great with Exchange 2003. Fewer MAPI connections to the server and compression on the connections has really improved my users experience with Outlook/Exchange. I've been running it here for about six months (on XCG5.5 and now 2K3) with no problems. We've had fewer trouble tickets related to Outlook problems since the installs and end user training were completed. |

Today, customers are saying older versions are "good enough" tomorrow they might be saying OpenOffice is "good enough".... just food for thought. |

Good catch, I wish Paul would stop referring to the current version of a software package as "older versions" it's not like we've even had a RTM of Office 12 yet. #8 Would you please get it through your head that market share and install base are two seperate things? Linux has had well over a 1% market share for sometime now and the only stat I've ever seen that Linux only has a 1% install base is from Googles Zeitgeist which no longer includes OSs used. Do you have a more current listing than that from archived zeitgeists? |

#5, OL2K3 in cached mode uses an OST file, not a PST file. An OST has no theoretical limit, though some suggest 16GB is a reasonable limit. If you have older accounts, or have upgraded where a PST was used, export the mailbox to a PST, dump the pst on the local machine and confirm you have an OST in applications data. Import the PST you exported and you can get around the 2.2 GB limit and the dust bunnies that seem to clog it up.
Try running OL2K3 clients using RPC over HTTPS <for remote users>. We have many users with greater than 4 GB mailboxes and see no issues. Use encryption and NTLM Authority - vice the recommended Basic Only - so users may log in with cached creds on their systems, but not have to log into mail each time they open OL. You can easily run your own CA and generate your own SSL Cert to use in support of the connection. Be sure to import your root CA after you have installed OL. When you set it up like this and check that you want to use cahced mode, OL will create the local OST when it opens for the first time. Use the same Cert/Root CA to support native OMA and mobile devices/active-sync, etc ... - your users will be very happy people and a lot more productive. |
