Apple Spotlight Patent Reveals 3-Year Head Start on Microsoft | |

A patent granted to Apple January 25th, 2005 appears to reveal that Apple had a multiyear head start on Microsoft for Spotlight, the Apple search technology that will be released later this year in Tiger. Many had seen Spotlight as a quickly developed, me-too technology intended to compete with Microsoft's long-delayed Longhorn update to Windows, but the patent application shows that Apple began working on the technology in January of 2000, years before Longhorn was announced. Spotlight offers a new paradigm on searching for anything on your Mac. From one place, you can search e-mails, contacts, images, calendars, and applications, and the results appear as you type. The company has also made it possible to integrate with other apps, with some of the Apple's iApps being the first to use it. | ||

While I don't like how the patent office handles software patents, I do not want them to stop issuing them.
They need to be more descriptive, and patent actual methods of doing something rather than vague ideas, and if you don't protect your patents and then all of a sudden decide in the year 2002 that you want to sue everyone who uses links in there page because they have a patent on hyperlinks, you lose your patent. |

| WinFS may not be available yet, but MSN Desktop Search is. It also just happens to have been released prior to Tiger. Hmm, Google beat Apple (and Microsoft) to desktop search as well. |

Considering that "Desktop Search"-style stuff is a very, very small part of WinFS, and that the Apple implementation is basically just desktop-search, all these things are a moot point.
WinFS is a meta-data layer on top of the file system that enables complex RELATIONSHIPS between file system objects. It's not just some indexing layer that lets you find your word docs faster. I find it incredible that so few people understand what Microsoft is trying to do the with WinFS, and I find it even more incredible that those same people don't seem to have any problem spouting off baloney about who is winning some phantom race for desktop search. Give me a break. |

| Thank you, RMD, for making that point! WinFS is so much more than simply an indexing system. Do people really think that that's all WinFS is? That's what MSN Desktop Search is, and you can tell how quick and simple that was to throw together by how quickly MS churned it out in response to the competition. WinFS is that, but so much more; that's why it's taking so long and is getting trimmed here and there. It's sort of like the revolution to file systems that avalon is to the UI. |
