Opinion: Microsoft shouldn't seek to bury the still-beloved NT 4.0. It should simply open-source it. To paraphrase a famous 17th-century playwright: Alas, poor Windows NT, I knew it, Bill: An OS of many blue screens, of most excellent fancy: It hath borne me on its network a million times; and now, how abhorred in our collective memory it is! Whatever you will say about Windows NT, it was a very successful and prosperous operating system. When Windows 2000 and Active Directory finally replaced it, many NT-administrator types longed for simpler times—as when it was appropriately patched, it was stable, performed well and was easy to administrate. | ||

Donpacman - Maybe they should embed the Firefox browser into the OS, instead of IE. Its much better :P
Provega - So you think Microsoft's Windows will be around in and reach edition, in the year 20,003? :P Opinion - Maybe we would see the open source Linux NT Edition 2005 :P This post was edited by Oracle on Sunday, January 23, 2005 at 11:22. |

I think it'd be nice for the people who have no intention whatsoever of leaving nt4 to have the source. Kind of a we're not going to fix it anymore but you can fix it yourself now if you like stance from Microsoft.
Being nice doesn't directly equate to more server 2003 sales though, so I don't see it happening. |

How many of us would give away our trade secrets, our experience, and our knowledge, freely to all who compete with us? Few or none, I surmise. We shouldn't expect Bill Gates to give away his source code for the same reasons. He may be filthy rich but he earned it.
Now I'll sit back and wait for the comments on how evil MS is and why we deserve welfare software. |

| I just wanted to point out one thing here to those who don't actually relise, William (Bill) Gates owns Microsoft. He started it with a Uni Friend, but he didn't create everything about it. I doubt Bill had anything directly to do with the Source code of NT. Bill is more a Business Man in my opinion than someone who is Hands On with software, like Software Designer or Engineer. |

| If they were going to open source something, I'd wager it would be Windows 95, but never any of the NT chain. That's still too valuable. |

| Oracle: Bill doesn't own Microsoft. He doesn't have a majority of the available shares. Even his ideas aren't always followed -- notice how he's not technically running things anymore. And he was a coder for quite a long time, possibly leading up to the development of NT. Even after that, he may not have had so much of a direct hand in the actual coding of the product, but he was almost certainly heavily involved in the directions taken. |

Quux, I agree. In fact, anyone that runs a server farm of any size will tell you that updating BIOS, firmware and drivers is a much larger headache than updating a Windows operating system and its applications. SMS and MOM have done much to eliminate the above. With the hardware vendors integrating their hardware update software and monitoring to SMS and MOM, this will become much easier as well.
