"Despite Bill Gates' announcement of new partnerships with LG, Discovery Channel and many others, his dream, of a Media Center where all media can be controlled with one remote and shared among all possible devices, will come true but not for Microsoft," Frank Ottink writes for YEALD. "So far the only company who has control over most aspects and has proven that it can pull together the parties is of course Apple with the iPod/iTunes combination." Ottink writes, "I'm not sure, but like many others, I suspect the rumored below $500 Q88 or 'headless' iMac, will be the first step of Apple to create a seamless media experience. The fact that it is headless makes it very suitable to become a TiVo like Personal Video Recorder sitting under or on top of a TV. Add some nifty Media Center software, connectivity to the iPod, the house network, and the internet, preferably wireless, and you have the perfect Media Center solution without having to buy a new high-end Media Center PC. The Apple folks are a funny lot... just look at the responses to the linked article, and you will see that they buy this rumor wholesale. No proof necessary!
Until Apple shows off its media center software--at a $500 price point with hardware, and with announcements from several manufacturers and content providers that support the platform--I'm, um, skeptical. A few examples of cracks in the Windows Media Center approach: Dell does not ship its PCs with Windows Media Center, it installs its own simple version. Better tell Dell. Go to Dell.com, click on Home & Home Office, then click on Experience Windows XP Media Center. |

| If they do have something like this up their sleeve, it would be a pretty good opportunity for Apple to get in a few CES-glitch jabs at Microsoft, though. :) Though if they did, they'd have to pray that all their demos worked absolutely flawlessly.... |

Apple won't beat MS unless they can match the cross-device format accessibility, industry partnership, and (coming in Q3 according to Anand) CableCard support.

It is the second such company we have converted to Microsoft clients, servers, and tools. Conversion was not the intent, but evolved as a result of how much better the results were when using Microsoft products and how much better an experience die-hard MAC advocates have had under Windows. MCE in the corporate world is also very much embraced and expanding. It owns the ed center, and the conference room. It also owns the homes of the principals in the companies hiring people, paying those people and sharing growth with those people. Microsoft may not yet own the living room, but it does not try to - it just produces and that, like the Ad agencies is why they succeed and so many of us succeed, as well. MCE and MCX just rock, and with HDTV DLP systems running a native 1280 over 720 for all inputs and at under 2500.00 dollars <for the DLP> MCE has more reason than ever to find its way into the livibg room. SP2, W2K3 Server SP1, R2, The Trustworthy computing environment is real, and becoming more so - hardware is so inexpensive it really is <over time> nearly free. MS Anti-Malware tools make it all pretty safe. It just rocks and is a lot of fun to work and play. About that there is little question - at least from what we see and from what we live. |
