Appliance or PC? Our the last effort to build a home theater PC was about a year ago, so it's time to revisit the topic. In the past year, a number of interesting, pre-configured "media PCs" have arrived on the scene. The boutique PC makers, such as VoodooPC with its Voodoo Vibe and Alienware's DHS series, offer examples of the craft. But even mainstream PC manufacturers have jumped on the bandwagon—Sony with its VAIO RA-810G and HP with its Digital Entertainment Center.
All of them are certainly fine products in their own right, but it seemed to us that we could build something equivalent, or maybe even a little better. At the top of our list was the ability to seamlessly integrate this rig into our home-theater system. Secondarily, it had to look like it belonged in a rack with A/V components. Finally, the system had to support HDTV viewing and recording. | ||

Ok, enough, of the articles in favor of Microsoft! How can IDC get *nix to $35B by 2008 when people are making WMC PCs? We need an article about *nix media player PCs - - what, there are none?

We build custom MCE 2005's - we love them, our customers love them and extended via an XBox to a TV is too cool to be fully appreciated here.
I hope this thread is active the week after Christmas - as "Project Ross" will begin - a custom MCE 2005 for a 12 year old that we will assist in building his own MCE. Would be nice to chronicle his build - as he learns to build and run a custom MCE 2005 system. As we do for all new people, we'll teach the science of systems building and administration and in this case, perhaps connect a young mans mind with his hands. He'll likely care for the system in ways that will keep both the system and himself safe and secure. MCE 2005 is an amazingly powerful and fun super-set and in a custom rig can be magical. It's hard to express how happy people are with these systems and Microsoft's newest MCE OS - they just nailed it and the support within the small OEM builders community top notch. |
