Microsoft price increase opens door for Open Office | |

The price hike in Microsoft Office Suite may push small and medium enterprises (SMEs) into the open source camp as the business software equivalent, Open Office, becomes more cost-effective, say market pundits. SMEs will shoulder the burden of Microsoft's price hike for its Office Suite software that came into effect from 1 November. Mike Cathie, Microsoft SA's business and marketing officer, says the price increase is aimed at bringing the local market in line with the US software manufacturer's international pricing policies. | ||

With the government looking to save money, they could switch from MS Office to Open Office and save millions of tax payers dollars.

| Actually, it would cost them more in support fees, and of course labor reconstructing the billions of word documents they have since openoffice doesn't properly convert Office docs. |

oh come on #6, user support for open office would NOT equal that of office. nevertheless there are good reasons to stick with ms (i.e. raises the value of my ms stock).
kidding aside, open source is becoming a much more compelling option as time has gone on due to ms's pricing structure. i for one choose to upgrade extremely infrequently and use older versions of office on the computers i build. this saves money and insures compatibility. |

Have you tired OpenOffice? I have and I am considering making the switch. You can save files in pdf format without having to go and spend extra money on Adode :) I install OpenOffice on all of my friends and family members computers that need a word processor.

| I like that the free OpenOffice Suite is referred to as "more cost effective". If it came with a functional database compatible with Access OpenOffice would be far more compelling. |

I have used it to a very extensive degree and it was HORRIBLE at converting Microsoft documents and spreadsheets. And that is with the latest version. Secondly, it needs a functional database as bobsireno has also pointed out, and has no Outlook alternative.
Finally, there is a huge lack of support and it is very slow. |

When version 2 of OpenOffice comes out next year, it will have a database app with it.

| I gave Open Office a good try and worked at it for several weeks in a determined effort to use it exclusively for that period. It just did not work for me. Using any of the documents clients had sent was very difficult and one forgets that there is no mail client, so one had to move away from Outlook, too. It was a mess - for me anyway and while it may at some distant time, provide something of an alternative, I wasn't able to wait on it. I bought another copy of Office 2003 Pro and will not consider an alternative for any of my systems until MS comes out and says that the product is serious competition. |
