First Service Pack for Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services Available Today | |

Microsoft Corp. today announced the release of the first service pack (SP1) for Microsoft® SQL Server™ 2000 Reporting Services. Reporting Services is an open and extensible reporting platform that can increase business insight by providing real-time information from any data source to any device. Reporting Services SP1 is available to SQL Server 2000 customers free via Web download and includes enhancements that increase functionality, performance and security. Key features of SP1 include support for exporting reports to Excel 97 and 2000, improvements in the PDF rendering extension for pagination and matrix performance, and control over series and data point styles in charts. These changes enable companies to get even more out of their SQL Server 2000 investments. | ||

SQL server is a great, cost effective, scalable database that is deployed at thousands of customers without issues. Just like MySQL...but just because MySQL is a good product, doesn't necessarily mean the SQL server "sucks". Your logic is flawed.
SQL Server 2005 (aka Yukon), will be released in 2005...probably. |

It's not slow, not clumsy (though MySQL could be considered that), and is very manageable and very scalable...you get what you pay for. MySQL works for it's purpose, but it's nowhere near SQL server or Oracle for that matter.

Well, that's because it works well in smaller environments where the added features are not required. Why pay if it's free for what you need? But some people have more complicated scenarios than what you have experieinced...and there is a place for those products because they provide added value.

Well, to be honest, what more can they do with SQL? It already has a first class SQL performance, clustering, OLAP (Reporting services), scale up, 64bit, etc. It's a very mature product.
Yukon brings more rich XML integration and business logic at the database layer. You can even have web services talk straight to the database and have business rules executed on the yukon box. humor |

| omfg there is no comparing mysql and sql2000.. The only place mysql is gaining due to it's freeness is in the area where people used to backend there sites with access, and in areas where folks are doing simple sql calls. Don't get me wrong mysql is a nice little cheap package and a few version from now it may be able to compete at the low end.. but it's not even in the same league right now. (yes I know a few major sites claim they use it.. but they also have 100's of people customizing and supporting it etc.. sql2000 has the best 'usability of any rdbms ever and I've had to support them all. Runner up a way distent 2nd is oracle, then db2 and what was sapdb.. you combine sapdbw/ mysql and you might have a decent product, which it seems to be where they are headed.) |
