Microsoft Muddies the 'Enterprise' Waters | |

When is an app not an enterprise app? Apparently, when the DOJ and Oracle are asking about it. Microsoft has had a lot of practice in delivering statements to the Department of Justice over the years. But its most recent such statement — that it has no plans to enter the enterprise application market within the next two years — is probably one of its most ludicrous. (And that is saying a lot.) | ||

| In the business applications space, Microsoft doesn't have any enterprise offerings that I'm aware of. It has apps and technolgoy upon which business apps are built (Windows Server, .NET Framework, SQL Server, Exchange Server, etc.). These are not the same thing. Microsoft isn't in the CRM business on an enterprise scale. It's not in the business intelligence market on an enterprise scale. Etc. Not surprisingly, I disagree with MJF on this issue. |

| I would agree that there current implementation of CRM is not greared toward "enterprise scale", but what about Great Plains? I would certainly call that an enterprise application. I will admit that coming from a small company (we do run Great Plains) it may just appear that what I would label as enterprise, others would only see as scaling up to mid-size organizations. |

Great Plains, Solomon, and NAVision are all targetted at small to midsized companies.

I agree that in time, these could be grown to support large enterprise customers (Fortune 1000 size), but that's not what they are built for right now. Oracle, SAP, and PeopleSoft, however, are built for that right now. Their target is the largest companies with billions in revenue. |
