Gates Rallies Developers For New Era of Computing | |

Today at the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference (PDC) 2001, Microsoft Corp. founder, Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates announced a slew of major deliverables for third-party software developers and highlighted surging developer and partner support for the .NET Platform, Microsoft's next-generation software foundation to connect the world of information, devices and people in a more unified and personalized way. Attendees received release candidate software for the Microsoft® .NET Framework and Visual Studio® .NET as well as technology previews for a wide range of forthcoming .NET technologies. Among the new software development kits delivered are the .NET My Services SDK and the .NET Compact Framework, which brings .NET to a variety of "smart" devices. Gates called on developers to use these tools to create a new generation of distributed applications built on XML Web services. | ||

Heh #10. I may be too young to remember. Heh. I'm 33, and my first machine at home ran CP/M-80.
#8 was the most accurate assessment. MS came long before there was a monopoly. By a stroke of luck and genius MS got the MS-DOS contract. The ruthfulness that you see on Microsoft's part is exactly because of the competition we do have in the marketplace. Things were much worse back in the late 80's when there was no competition. Microsoft didn't even wake up from their lumbering sleep until DR-DOS 5.0 was announced. This has resulted in exponentional changes yearly in the quality of their products and the pace of their innovation. MS was chosen as a monopoly by the customers. The customers prefer a monopoly over disparate and incompatible systems. BTW, #10. DOS is dead. It's long dead. I want it dead. I want nothing to do with DOS. Pining away for the days of DOS serves no purpose because it was not a better time. I find it so utterly amazing that people still whine about things that happened 10 years ago that have no bearing on the present. |

Long before the the grown up chicken there was an egg. To understand the present, I think it is often helpful to look at the past. As for wishing for the past...NO THANKS!
DOS. If I'm not mistaken, wasn't MSDOS a joint venture with IBM? Microsoft could slap a label on it and call it MSDOS and IBM put their label on it and called it IBMDOS. I have (or had) IBMDOS 5.0 which was the same as MSDOS 5. I imagine that if Microsoft did anything underhanded it was likely with the help of Big Blue. Monopolies. Amen #11! The market did indeed create Microsoft. As a developer I must say that I like to deal with not just a standard but a single implementation of a standard. Programming would be much more difficult if I had to account for the differences among platforms. And don't get me started that Java is the answer to that problem :) |
