Longhorn moving away from COM and DCOM | |

Don Box, a Microsoft software architect in charge of Indigo, the part of Longhorn (the next Windows OS) that involves the ways programs communicate, spoke about Indigo at the Developing Software for the Future Microsoft Platform conference in London. Microsoft has worked with Component Object Model (COM) and Distributed Compound Object Model (DCOM) in its operating systems to this point. These processes allow objects to be sent between programs in the OS, and were touted as the best option for many years. However, object-oriented programming has taken a downturn with the increased use of Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE), and Microsoft is working hard at keeping up. | ||

Probably because one model wouldn't fit everyone's needs for every scenario.
That's why the focus is on web services and Indigo. So you can communicate across systems without having to create one model and/or drop legacy investments. |

That's not what CORBA is for either. CORBA is a very complicated standard for cross machine communication, not for component development. COM, by itself, has nothing to do with cross machine communication. DCOM, or COM+ if you prefer, added cross machine communications capability. If you're using .NET, utilizing a web service is quite literally just like using a COM component. MyWebService service = new MyWebService(); service.SomeMethodCall(someParameter); That looks a hell of a lot like a component to me. In addition, it would work exactly the same way in Java or VB for that matter... as long as you had the web services infrastructure there to support it. I want this control to be the same code thats on my client and on my web client. Like ActiveX or COM. I'm not really sure what you mean. In ASP.NET I can use the exact same business objects to power my web site as I do to power my client application. You can do the same in Java and many other languages/platforms as well. Are you talking about UI or something? If so, that doesn't make any sense at this point. The UI for a web page is much different than the UI for a client application. |
