Well, I donno about $40, but there are 31 reasons not to use IE:

http://www.pivx.com/larholm/unpatched/

I use Mozilla Firebird exclusively now. I like it a lot.

RMD,

Set the security settings properly in IE, and those 31 reasons go away.

#4 - Hardly. While if you disable javascript (and therefore disable the majority of web sites on the planet), you do get rid of quite a few of them... but there are still several that require absolutely no privledges to execute.

So, I can turn off javascript and cripple most sites and only protect myself from most of the exploits, or I can use an arguably suprior browser that has no known exploits.

Don't get me wrong, I'm SURE there are expolits in Firebird. There are exploits in pretty much every non-trivial application. The point is, they are less likely to be taken advantage of since Firebird is used by very few people.

Seriously, everybody should give Firebird a shot. Be sure to install the graphical mouse jestures plugin. It really rocks.

I can't wait for somebody to start accusing me of being anti-Microsoft.

#1 >>> Can someone explain to me in what situation you would want to pay the $40 for this browser instead of using IE?

It only costs $40 to get rid of the banner ads; you can download the browser free of charge.

"RMD,

Yeah, but then you can't browse or do squat any more :)

I still find no compelling reason to switch. The popup thing might have been a reason, but then google came out with their new toolbar.

I keep several browsers around to test with, but they just aren't as easy to use as IE.

#7 By 37 (64.109.30.2) at 9/24/2003 2:15:50 PM
I can't remember the last time I couldn't access a site with my settings turned off, including ActiveX.

I have used Firebird before btw, and I didn't care for it at all. I add Avant Browser to my IE and it does everything Firebird does, but better, and it's on IE.

As for your HARDLY comment, well, try again. Turning off scripting and activex controls, etc DO eliminate MANY of those exploits. I know of Hundreds of people that browse the web with those features turned off. Go ahead and set your security to high, or just set active X or scripts to prompt, and you can prevent each of those exploits from running that are listed on the link you provide. I just tried them. Even the one that says it runs without scripting requires ActiveX, and with prompting, even THAT is not exploiting my machine.

#9 - "I can't remember the last time I couldn't access a site with my settings turned off, including ActiveX."

You can honestly say that without javascript, your browsing expierence is just as good as somebody with javascript on? Come on.

I'll give you a web page to visit. Then we can have some fun as I install countless back doors on your machine and remotely control it until I'm blue in the face. Or, if you're smart enough to have a personal firewall of some kind that blocks outgoing traffic, I'll just set the program to delete your system and person files.

Then we'll see how happy you are running IE.

If your not that daring, just go here in IE:

http://www.malware.com/badnews.html

If that doesn't scare you into using something other than IE, then you're a braver man than I. No, it doesn't actually hurt anything, but it does show that it easily could.

"you can prevent each of those exploits from running that are listed on the link you provide."

You're either lying or you missed a bunch. Here is just one of many:

Re-evaluating HTML elavation dataSrc command execution
Description: Allows execution of arbitrary commands in Local Zones
Detail: This bug is related to the codebase local path bug, but details the actual issue and runs without scripting or ActiveX enabled
Published: February 28th 2002

Example exploit: http://security.greymagic.com/adv/gm001-ie/advbind.asp

As far as you not liking Firebird, I can't imagine why. It renders every page just about as well as IE, is at least as fast as IE, and has a very cool plugin architecture with tons and tons of cool plugins. I also really love tabbed browsing (even though I thought I wouldn't). I even made it look exactly like IE in everyway. If it wasn't for the tabs, you wouldn't be able to tell it wasn't IE.

The only thing I don't like about it is that it doesn't handle all file types quite right. I can't click on a movie link and stream it, for instance. Instead, it downloads it. This bug has been filed already, and will be fixed in version 0.7.

Also, any of the security zone switching bugs (of which there are several) are not affected by your IE settings.

"You can honestly say that without javascript, your browsing expierence is just as good as somebody with javascript on? Come on. "

Now you are saying browsing "experience". Which is it? I have to click on prompt boxes.

"You're either lying or you missed one. See:

I'm not lying or missing one. That doesnt exploit my system nor effecct notepad. I am willing to allow you to even use Remote Desktop and you can try it on my system. Believe me when I say, I have my settings set very secure within IE.

"If your not that daring, just go here in IE:

http://www.malware.com/badnews.html "

Nada...doesn't do a thing. Again, feel free to do remote desktop and see for yourself. I have nothing to lie about.

You can give me all the links you want, and I will test them. I am familiar with the ones you have given me.

Give me a REAL challenge Bob ;-)

Hrmph. I set IE's internet zone to high security and the exploits still occured, which is why I doubted you.

But I checked again, and it is still set to medium security. I guess if you have any special options checked, it won't set it to what you choose unless you click "default" first, then set it.

My mistake. You are correct.

At any rate, I'll still take Firebird. It's simply a better browser and I don't have any anoying dialogs to deal with.

#12 By 20 (67.9.179.51) at 9/25/2003 12:40:36 AM
I've tried it (Opera) like 2 or 3 times and I can't see why anyone would use this browser, let alone plunk $40 down for it.

- Fastest browser on earth!
Yeah whatever. IE is so friggin' fast on my machine, the 0.0002ms Opera might be faster is irrelevant

Opera is small
Opera uses less memory... hrm. When I ran it it was about equivalent to IE

Innovative
- MDI : don't need it or want it. I need multiple windows because that's how I work with CoolDesk or whatever desktop switching app I'm running today

- mouse gestures: Oh come on, it's the friggin' web, do we need to make it this complex? I mean seriously, how hard is it to click on a link?

- keyboard shortcuts: backspace, enter, CTRL+R and tab, what more do you need? Seriously.

- Hotclick translation, presentation tool, zooming, integrated search... Yawn

- Panel management: I don't want 30% of my screen cluttered up with useless crap and banner ads trying to sell me junk I don't want. Why would someone pay $40 to have more advertising thrown at them?

This is reason #2 why I never used Netscape post-3.x

- Password manager: Ok, that's kinda neat, but I never store passwords out of paranoia, but that's just me. I can see how other people would find this useful. But then, IE does this for the most part and the FREE google toolbar helps out too

- Notes, Fast forward, Rewind, Slideshow... yawn

- One-click skinning: I don't want any skinning, let alone one-click skinning

- Cookie manager: This is cool, but not $40 cool

- mail client: Everything sucks compared to Outlook 2003, sorry. Even if it wasn't, it's still not worth $40

- Built in search: www.google.com, add favorites, quick link, etc. How hard is that? Google toolbar, even easier

- Window management (MDI/SDI, tabs): See above

- Session manager: Eh... nifty, I suppose. I might use this one, but not for $40

- drag and drop support: Oooh!! Hey, they list fixing the buggy crap in their old browsers as a new feature, good marketing

- pop-up blocking: boo. Proxomitron, Google Toolbar and about 16E10^26 other utilities

- Small screen rendering: I use VS.NET for development and it does this already, besides, is this really a big feature?

etc

I just don't see it. I guess if you REALLY hate MS and you insist on making your life more difficult to spite MS, then this might be a pretty good browser, but I just don't see how a normal, non-neurotic person would be willing to a.) switch and b.) plunk down an extra $40

#13 By 16451 (65.19.17.194) at 9/25/2003 8:44:11 AM
Its a pity that half of your points are based upon a falsehood. Next time you might try actually learning about a topic before you grace us with your opinion.

#14 By 37 (64.109.30.2) at 9/25/2003 8:55:54 AM
I would recommend that you point out the "falsehoods". My experience and opinion is very similar to dazs'

#15 By 16451 (65.19.17.126) at 9/25/2003 9:21:28 AM
1. You do not pay $40 to get a "mail client", a "session manager", or any of Opera's features, because the product is downloadable and available for use free of charge

2. You do not "pay $40 to have more advertising thrown at them", you pay the $40 only if you want to get rid of the advertising pane.

3. Daz's claim of "the 0.0002ms Opera might be faster " is factless on its face.

4. In light of real measurements, as well as his tendancy to exagerate, I'm also doublefull of Daz's claim that "When I ran it it was about equivalent to IE [in memory size].

5. "mouse gestures" ... "make it this complex". It is not more complex to drag the mouse to the left from any screen position on order to to back a page than it is to find your browser's back button and click it. The number of physical actions are the same, but mouse movement will be less using "gestures".

6. "pop-up blocking" provided by "about 16E10^26 other utilities ". This exageration shouldn't even require comment.

Brian,
I don't mind if you prefer IE to Opera, in fact I respect your right to your personal preference. But my prior comment was not directed to personal preferences, it was directed to Daz's confrontational statements based upon false or nonexistance facts.
