Microsoft limits XML in Office 2003 | |

A distinction that Microsoft is making between professional and standard versions of Office 2003 means that many customers may not get all the features they've been expecting, including broad support for Web services. For more than a year, Microsoft has touted Office 2003's support for Extensible Markup Language (XML), a highly anticipated new feature of the productivity suite. But Microsoft now plans to fully deliver the feature only in the two high-end versions of the product, one of which will be available only to businesses subscribing to Microsoft's volume-licensing program. | ||

| One significant point in the article, though--why on earth upgrade to the Standard edition? Most the selling points promoted by Microsoft for Office 2003 seem to be stripped from the Standard version. This is a bit of a perplexing move to me. |

| As I read this again, I think this could be a move to push more businesses to the more expensive Pro version. |

| To me the article is unclear, what I understood is that "Infopath" will be only in the higher versions but you will be still be able to save your spreadsheet in XML format even without this app. True you will not be able to create "custom forms" on XML format but I don't think this will be a huge limitation for smaller companies. This of course if my assumptions are correct. |

It's ironic that one of the biggest complaints about Office upgrades has been that the average user does't need any new features, hasn't needed any of the new features added in the past 10 years, doesn't need more than a few basic features, etc.
Microsoft decides to agree that only high-end customers will need new features, and suddenly everybody cries foul. As near as I can figure, the only way to satisfy everyone will be for Microsoft to make the entire product and its source code available for free, not just on the web but also for Microsoft to deliver complimentary media in every person's format of choice, directly to their doorstep via the courier of their choice, on the preferred date/time of their choice, along with $1 million in complimentary cash. No, wait. British customers will most certainly complain about unfavorable exchange rates between the dollar and the pound. Scratch the whole plan. |
