Microsoft breaks with standards effort | |

In a sign of growing discord over Web services guidelines, Microsoft has pulled out of a key Web services standards working group. Over the past month, IBM and Microsoft have been at odds with other companies around standards submissions, including a high-profile effort within the Web's leading standards organization, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Now Microsoft has upped the rancor by dropping out of a W3C working group focused on establishing rules for how businesses will send and receive data to one another via Web services. | ||

| I find this somewhat dissapointing. I'm sure Microsoft had their reasons, but just like you don't ignore the UN when they don't vote your way, you don't drop out of standards groups when they don't agree with your design ideas. |

| Hmm... last I checked that standards working group (and the UN too) are both voluntary organizations. If MSFT wants out, who am I to criticize. |

I'm all for standards, as long as they make sense. A moronic idea, even if decalred a "standard," is still a moronic idea.
The problem is, when standards compliance equates to stagnation. It's the old "Now don't you do that! It'll change the status quo!" Change, enhancement, and evolution through improvement and growth are vitally important to all endeavours. Same with the W3C. There's some good ideas that are being left out in the cold because if them. Maybe if they just moved faster... It's also important to determine who or what chooses a standard? Is it still a standard if some group says it is even though nobody listens? Is a majority vote allowed, or is it a dictatorship? Or are standards decided by the useage of the people? Maybe MS decided to jump ship because of something like that...who knows. |

Standards are a very important part of the world of computing. Anybody who denies that has little knowledge of history.
I'm the first to point that out standards can stifle innovation. When you do nothing but adhere to standards, no progress is made. That has little to do, however, with standards groups and more to do with the companies implementing those standards. Microsoft has long been a proponent of exceeding standards. They implement a standard (albeit sometimes incompletely), and then extend the standard by adding new features. Both Microsoft and I consider this progress. Many slam Microsoft for doing more than they have too. IE was often bashed for having lots of "non-standard" stuff... this is stupid. We wouldn't have JavaScript if Netscape didn't exceed the standards of the time, and that's just one example of many. Very few new things are created in standards groups... instead, standards groups see what others have done, discuss what's good and bad, and co-opt these technologies where appropriate. At any rate, all of this is very different from simply leaving a standards group. We don't know why Microsoft left, but whatever the reason, it would almost certainly be better for everybody if they had not. If the standards group implements something independently of Microsoft, there will be two conflicting technologies and that will make my life, and everybody else's, much harder. |

We aren't talking about Windows. We are talking about IE. Last I checked, IE leads the pack for Mac browsers too. |
