Microsoft Press Release |

Consumers tired of emptying their wallets every time they go to the gas station can turn to a free service on MSN® at http://www.autos.msn.com/ to locate the least expensive gas in their area -- and save as much as $12 when they fill their tank. As gas prices continue to rise across the United States, the customized service analyzes prices at 20,000 gas stations daily to offer consumers a list of the locations with the cheapest prices in their ZIP code.

The only question that I have is how often are the prices updated on this thing?
This will would be great if it worked with your pda and gps.

This is going to be the beauty of SPOT... you'll be paying for crappy, out of date, or inaccurate data, if you can receive it at all, that you can receive--more accurately, more indepth--by flipping on the TV or looking out the window.

The listings are spot on for the gas stations in my area. I live in a big city and imagine that the data is more accurate in larger cities...

"I live in a big city and imagine that the data is more accurate in larger cities..."
Can you explain that logic? A larger city is going to be full of numerous gas stations that aren't necessarily on MS's radar, aren't tied to a chain's pricing, move quicker than the data can be accumulated, aren't they? I know in my area there are many gas stations that undercut the average price in much of the city because they are small independent operators looking to steal some business--their rates fluctuate in a manner inconsistent with the big chains, but they are worth keeping an eye if you really are looking for savings.

By the way, this site is 12 cents over what I have seen as the lowest pricing recently. Thanks for the help, MSN.
But maybe they aren't specifically within the same zip code I entered or something--which is another problem (if it does just look within the entered zip), I've got like 12 zips within 10 minutes... I'll take a drive, MSN, rather than getting boned for 12 cents a gallon as per your recommendation.

Dude, jerk you have been super hillarious lately... Did Bill do something especially nasty to piss you off?
Why would data be collected in a large city be more accurate? More people there, more people to report, large cities are technologically more advanced and have more infrastructure in place... Bla bla bla.

Yeah, Jerk is in a good spirits tonight. I live in N.Y City and information is dead on. Like I said in my first comment add a PDA and GPS and your in business.
I've got like 12 zips within 10 minutes... I am guessing that Jerk is making that up but his point is noted.

Lucky for me I fill up my tank only about once a month. I only drive my car on the weekends, and the rest of the time I take the subway everywhere I need to go in Boston.

RMD - Shame on you for being so unAmerican! You should buy an H2 Hummer, get 5 mpg and fill up your tank daily to help support the war in Iraq!
BTW, more accurate info for the Twin Cities can be found here:

Prices are always out of date, by 72+ hours, and that means 15 cents a gallon in most cases. So no matter how they figure it out in the Cincy area, it isn't worth the time, since there are several better local web sites that people enter the data on and it only hold the info for 72 hours. The MSN was close to Priceline's Gas crap were you bought gas at one price and then found out you over paid when you got to the pump.

What is so shocking or hilarious about my response?
Yes, in the Bay Area there are many zips within a close proximity... 10 minutes in every case? Maybe not... but I do drive to Marin, SF, across the hills every week or so, so yes, I am only ten minutes away from these places on my travels.
Hailstorm, I know how the data is collected--how is it better with the butterfly if you can go straight to the source or to a local web site.
Red, how does having a larger statistical pool make it more accurate when looking for the one gas station with the CHEAPEST gas? It doesn't make sense that a higher volume of traffic and more data points would improve the search for the cheapest. More infrastructure? What does that mean? Isn't the cheapest likely not to be a part of a large chain? It sounds like you are saying exactly that the cheapest won't show up.
Thanks for being intelligent and sensible, johnny.

jerk, its better with the butterfly... because those other sites don't push the data to you in the same ways. are you thinking clearly? Do you think Opisnet.com will send data to your cell phone, watch, MSN IM, email, etc?

Sodablue,
I spend an easy $35 a week with my brand new V-8 gas guzzling SUV, and I buy my gas at Citgo, which doesn't get their fuel from the middle east.
Try going to a gas station that doesn't get their gas from the middle east...there are plenty.
