Microsoft told to ship Java in 120 days | |

A federal judge on Wednesday ordered Microsoft to begin shipping Sun Microsystems' Java with the Windows operating system within 120 days, after the companies fought over implementing a ruling he made last month. U.S. District Judge J. Frederick Motz summoned lawyers for both sides in the private antitrust suit to a special hearing on their failure to agree on the exact terms of a preliminary injunction. "I can't sit here hearing after hearing," Motz said. "I want this done in 120 days." Motz ruled on Dec. 23, 2002, that Sun had a good chance of winning its antitrust case against Microsoft, and said he would grant a preliminary injunction forcing Microsoft to include Java in its Windows computer operating system. | ||

This is proof that judges have no business interferring with business. If someone wants Java in Windows, all they have to do is go to http://java.sun.com/products/ and find the appropriate download for their version of Windows.
What's next, a judge insisting that Microsoft include RealOne player? |

What if I don't want Sun's piece of crap software? If it is included (as implied by the article) in an XP SP 2, I won't have a choice (isn't that the point, consumer choice?) of installing it or not. Include it on Windows Update....fine. But give me the choice of installing it or not (just like I have now). I can choose (and have chosen) not to install Sun's JVM on my machine. Now Judge Jackson 2 is going to FORCE me to do it (that is if I want to keep my system up-to-date with an XP SP 2.

| davis, your analogy is way off base. In like manner, Java's interpretted nature would have been prohibitted since BASIC and dozens of other languages were interpretted, JITted, and/or VMified long before it. Sun's Java didn't do anything that hadn't been thought of before. They put some ideas together from different places and gave it a familiar C/C++ syntax. IOW they did just what Microsoft did a little later with C#. C# improved on Java's capabilities, but more correctly C# improved on Microsoft's "corrupt" Java implementation. Java improved on existing ideas too. This lawsuit is nothing but sour grapes. |

Hello, we're talking about a few megs worth of files which do not interfere with the normal operation of the OS and is already to be delivered by Sun and the injunction was to include it with Windows products. MS is saying they need NINE MONTHS and ONLY AS A DOWNLOAD.
I would tell MS to shut up and deal with it too. A suggestion is one thing. Idiocy and feet dragging is another. He is the Judge presiding over his courtroom, not Microsoft. |

FinancialWiz - Latest version? Which one is that?
When I downloaded the latest version like 6 months ago on XP... there was a 10 second delay the first time you brought up IE and hit a site with Java as the JVM loaded and compiled and crap. Now what I'd call efficient or effective. "I don't want MS piece of crap Media Player, but I have it anyways." I think you are hearing rumors and taking them as fact. Windows Media player 9 works great and normal pc users would not know the difference. |

The reason for this is in the story:
"Sun had complained in a court filing that Microsoft wanted to take up to a year before including the Java program in copies of Windows it sells." #5 Won't a 3 legged table always be stable? It's when you get to 4 and more legs when you run into stability problems! #6 Can you uninstall all the other 'crap' that comes with a default install of windows? Or can you remove only some of it? Note that I'm positive that there would be an uninstall feature for Sun's JVM. #7 Not about hearing the facts... more about the quote above. |
