Oracle plan exposes Java rift 09:09 Friday 20th December 2002 Martin LaMonica, CNET News.com Competing players are trying to integrate Java development tools, in the face of well-organised competition from Microsoft In a move that has exposed a growing schism in the Java community, an Oracle proposal to bridge Java development tools moved ahead this week with approval from competing Java companies. Oracle submitted its Java Specification Request (JSR) 198 proposal last month to the Java Community Process (JCP), the Sun Microsystems-led program for introducing new features into Java specifications. An expert review committee to examine the proposal was selected this week. | ||

Java Community Process (JCP), the Sun Microsystems-led program for introducing new features into Java specifications
:: falls to the floor :: Oh my gosh! A factual, unbiased representation of the truth from ZDNet! Is the world coming to an end! For all those paying attention, the press likes to call Java "open" because it has the JCP and .NET "closed" because it doesn't have a NCP (even though corporations and private individuals can contribute to the ECMA process). The JCP is run by Sun and they have absolute veto power, so it's not "open". It's currently MORE open than .NET, but it's not "open" in the true sense of the word. |

The AWT/Swing approach creates identical presentations, regardless of the operating system. For example, an application that presents order status from a customer care application would look the same to a Windows XP, Macintosh or Linux computer
I don't think I'd go that far. It would look and behave SIMILARLY, but there are plenty of quirks and differences. Truth be told, there needs to be one major and defining IDE that the community can rally against. Currently that's Eclipse, but that's IBM run, so the other companies are a little cautious to give IBM any credit. All this infighting was inevitible and it sounds like Java might turn into CORBA, a dead-locked technology that never got anywhere because none of the companies could agree on anything. Not suprisingly, CORBA was supposed to be a Microsoft COM killer. It looks like Oracle, BEA, IBM, Sun, et al are scrambling to turn Java and this new IDE into a .NET and VS.NET killer. I predict they will fail with similar fates. |

This is the key. They could've just wrote this to summarize the entire article:

"I see Oracle as trying to play the peacemaker role... (but) it will take at least six months to see where it's really going and how the affinities line up." IBM is making a play for Java. It was once thought that IBM would just buy Sun out and be done with that, but it looks like Sun is becomming more and more the pariah of the IT industry. It looks like IBM might steal Java out from under Sun in a better-played version of the Microsoft attempt. Presumably, Sun will fumble and stumble as much as they did with Microsoft and simply embarass themselves further. Once Sun has established itself as the village idiot and their stock falls below it's already embarassing price, IBM will swoop in and snag them and revive Java to compete with .NET. |

nice url #5 pretty intersting site there.
Bottom line is that if they can pull this off.. ie get a solid ide for java development together and packaged up with some integration with DB2\oracle and websphere stuff before microsoft releases the yukon updated version of vs.net then they may very well give themselves and .java a shot in the arm and it will give ms a run for there money. If not.. it may very well fragment java to some degree.. unless that is ibm buys out sun.. which could happen. |
