Utility runs Windows apps on Linux thin clients | |

CodeWeavers, Inc. today unveiled CrossOver Office Server Edition, a Linux utility that allows the use of popular Windows software -- including Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, Lotus Notes, and Visio -- on Linux thin clients. In addition to supporting Microsoft Office, Outlook, and Internet Explorer, CrossOver Office Server Edition 1.3.1 also supports Lotus Notes, and Microsoft Visio 2000. Support for additional client environments, like Windows, HP-UX, Apple, and SGI, is planned for future releases. CrossOver Office 1.3.1 runs the same set of apps directly on a Linux system. | ||

I think it works this way: Windows 2000 Pro has an equivalency license to use Windows 2000 Server Terminal Services. Windows XP has no such license. Windows .NET Server 2003 will not support equivalency licensing. I'll see if I can pull up the links for that. |

OK, I was mistaken in part.

Why do Windows XP Professional desktops need a TS CAL?" and "Why aren't Windows 2000 Professional desktops included in the transition plan to get free TS CALs?" So, to correct my previous post, if I understand correctly, Windows XP has an equivalency license to run Terminal Services on Windows 2000 Server. With Windows .NET Server 2003, though, there is no equivalency licensing. |

remdotc - um, yeah right. There are a heck of a lot of companies that seem to be able to implement Terminal Services. I don't know why you had the problems you had. As for your prices, um, your way off. If you spent an hour or two per week to support your Linux clients, I think you'll see that the company saves money using the Windows client that didn't require that extra time.
parker, wow, I didn't know Windows XP users got free TS Cals. They should have included that in the licensing FAQ I referenced, since I'm sure a lot of people would like to know that. |

It's a little off-topic, but I use the Microsoft MacOS X RDC client at home to access and run Windows Software on my Terminal Server on the home network every day. Over the Network, when running it full screen, I can barely tell that it's not the original Windows Machine I'm sitting at. This RDP stuff does work. It's simply a matter of how fat the pipe is between the machines. I had a friend over a few months ago, and I just happen to have my DVD Catalloging software up on the iMac screen. It is actually a PC program I was running via RDC. I had it at full screen. I was showing him now nice this software was, and he never even noticed that it was running on the iMac (though it's beyond me how someone could not notice :) ). TL |
