Luis Millan Vazquez de Miguel, a college professor turned politician, is succeeding where multibillion-dollar, multinational corporations have failed. He is managing to unseat Microsoft Corp. as the dominant player in the software industry, at least in his little part of the world. Vazquez de Miguel is the minister of education, science and technology in a western region of Spain called Extremadura, a mostly rural expanse of olive trees and tiny towns with 1.1 million inhabitants. In April, the government launched an unorthodox campaign to convert all the area's computer systems, in government offices, businesses and homes, from the Windows operating system to Linux, a free alternative. | ||

I am impressed! the average mom and pop users in that part of Spain are modifying the open source code to meet their needs. I can see where if the don't have the source code for Office XP they should stop using it. Life is not complete with out the source for Smart Tag. |

<soapbox> This is so off topic, but you guys are driving me crazy with this WWII stuff... Face it ... who built the planes? Who built the ships? Landing craft? Tanks? Who paid for and sent a huge majority of troops and commanded them to victory? Where would the Russians and British been with out US money, Loan Lease programs and plans for up to date military machinery? This has nothing to do with the MS ... but anyone who thinks that WWII could have been won without the US and wasn't the overwhelmingly largest contributor to the war all over the world is either ignorant or stupid. This does not take away from the bravery and sacrifice of soldiers from other countries as stated above. But put the meager resources of Britain, Canada, and Australia at the time against Japan and Germany of the time? Wholesale slaughter .... </soapbox> |

Hmm... As far as I remember WWII was pretty much a large group effort.
If Britain hadn't kept the German's off their shores there might not have been an Allied victory as the US would have had no place from which to stage an invasion. If the Russians hadn't fought back as hard as they did at St. Petersburg, there might not have been an Allied victory because the Germans would have had far more resources available on the western front. If Italy hadn't decided to surrender in late 1943, there wouldn't have been pressure against the German southern lines... again resulting in more resources available on the western front. There's so many things that happened during WII that resulted in Allied victory, and it was a huge team effort. I do not much care for Americans who gloat about our performance in WWII. Our role was primarily determined by luck and being at the right place at the right time. |

Barring "what ifs" remove the US from the war and the Allies would have lost. Remove New Zealand, Britain, or Canada? While there would have been obvious set backs. It was a group effort .... but without the men and material from the US the "group" would have failed ... How did the Russians feed and arm their troops? How did the Brits eat and arm? In both cases the US Merchant Marine and funds from Congress. I'm not even going to start on the Intelligence and code breaking that made everything seem so easy (Mostly thanks to the English who brole codes and "started setting Eurpoe on fire".
I'm not gloating, just stating facts. Personally I'm proud that we did what we did. It does frustrate me when these same people that were liberated by a large majority by US men and money don't appreciate the immense sacrifice made for them by the soldiers and citizens of this country. If you think the war was won on luck, I suggest you educate yourself on the subject. |

sodablue - you do our soldiers a disservice, saying the role was determined by luck. You democrats always think the best things in life come from LUCK. Thats why you think people end up rich... because they are lucky. BS! The fact is, that MOST things come from hard work and extraordinary effort. Period.
