Microsoft Corp. and ViewSonic Corp. have agreed to market a handheld device that runs Microsoft's Pocket PC software and sells for $299. The companies planned to announce the move Monday. The device is the first using Microsoft's technology that costs less than $300, a "sweet spot" in pricing, said Ed Suwanjindar, product manager of the mobile devices division. It will be available Nov. 1. The agreement is the latest with hardware manufacturers that the company has teamed with in rolling out its Pocket PC software. Microsoft has been courting manufacturers aggressively and landing deals with cell phone carriers to market devices that run its technology as the market for handheld PCs, "smart" cell phones and other devices grows. | ||

| Wow, these devices are really driving into Palm's sweet price point now. Without a claim to "low-cost", what can Palm stand on? |

| #3 hits the nail right on the head. At that price point Palm is in trouble. What will HP (Jornada) and other Pocket PC producers do? lower their price ofcourse thus adding more pressure to palm. |

Not to mention that the Toshiba e310 also has almost the same form factor as the Palm V--same thickness and weight. They really are pressuring Palm on nearly all accounts now--Palm can't stand on price and form factor anymore. If they can match them in battery life (although they are about the same if you're talking apples to apples--color screen + light, etc.), the pressure will be that much higher... the application support is coming to fruition as well. Palm better up the ante soon if they want to compete. If they can keep their simplicity while boosting features and profit margin, they may stand a chance.
Hmmm... btw, Microsoft isn't doing so well on this front because of their desktop monopoly, but because they are offering a better product overall. Hmmm.... |

| Good points RedHook and bluvg. IMO, Palm has been in neutral for so long, that their momentum is non-existent. Their next OS version will need to warm my coffee, to stand a chance at earning my $. |
