Microsoft to Expand DRM Push With Server | |

Microsoft Corp. is pushing further into digital rights management with a plan for a DRM server due to go into beta testing later this year. DRM technology enables content creators, such as record companies, to encrypt content and define who can decrypt it and how they can use it. Microsoft is counting on increasing adoption of the technology to help drive demand for many of its current and future products. | ||

All I can say is remember DivX, a most spectacular failure with consumers.
If Microsoft has chosen to follow this path as their next 'Big revenue generator', then I hope they are ready for the utter failure it will become. People do not like to controlled, and that's all this is about. It provides NO visible benifit to the consumer. |

Well thats what you have now. No DRM. Fun, isn't it? Of course it is, except there's one little bitty problem... The people CREATING the content aren't getting paid for their time/effort/talents. And thats wrong. |

The effect on end users remains the same as with any other technology. If you don't like it, don't buy it. If you don't buy it, the content companies will do something else. It is a simple idea of economics, I don't see why people don't seem to understand this.
Furthermore, I never hear a specific aspect of Microsoft's DRM technolgoy attacked (other than with Media Center PCs). If you have a specific complaint, make it and then let's dicuss it. If you don't, the whining gets old really fast. |

Explain yourself #10. Why doesn't it help the people who create the content? Who do you mean when you say "people who create the content"? Why will it keep things status-quo for fat cats? How will it keep things status quo? What do you mean by status-quo?
DRM in abstract is no different than an ACL placed on a file. The difference between an ACL and DRM is that ACL are specific to the local network and DRM spans networks. The concept of DRM shouldn't frighten anyone. For the life of me, I still can't understand why it does. For weeks I have asked and asked for specifics about what is so terrible about DRM and all I hear is general speculation without any foundation in fact. Most people call this irrational. Some others would just plain call it FUD. I would beta test a DRM server. I'd buy a product that supported DRM. I would purchase content that had been DRM'ed. |

I think you are avoiding the issue. First of all DRM is a whole lot more than record companies. It is potentially all broadcasting - radio, television, movies, music, newspaper - all publishing, books, magazines, etc, all software. DRM is digital copyright protection. It goes beyond even that though. You can use it to protect emails or letters that you send, project specs you write up.
As for who receives what royalites in the record business, that really has nothing at all to do with DRM. I don't see that the public is being overcharged for anything. Overcharge is a very interesting word that gets used far too often, I think. Personally, I don't pirate music, have at least 100 CD's, and paid on average less than $8 for them. I've done music clubs, purchased during sales or with promotions, and purchased a lot of stuff direct from Sony. I don't think I've been overcharged for my music. I think people that say things about protecting the artists and avoiding the middle man, don't really care too much about the artists. I think they care about cheap music. There are artists who care about pirating (Metallica and Dr. Dre come to mind). Artists are free to do whatever they want with themselves and their music. There isn't a single artist that I've heard about who didn't say something like, my/our career didn't go anywhere until [insert a label] found us and gave us a record deal. The record labels make the artists. When the artist gets big, many go off on their own. It's their choice. Personally, I don't really care about who is getting my money - the record company, the record store, the web site, the artist, etc. as long as I get the music I want legally. |

FinancialWiz - Most DVDs cost $17-20... Most CDs cost $12-15.
There are a few DVDs at $10, but there are also a few CDs at $6-9. The pricing is all supply and demand based, if people stop buying, they'll lower the prices. |
